Probiotics and Mesalamine enemas

I take Mesalamine 4g enema every night as well as taking probiotics.

Does the Mesalamine 4g enema in any way reduce the efficacy of the probiotics?

I hope not, because I use enemas twice a week, and take probiotics daily. I don't think it would, but I could be wrong.

My probiotic literature says that sulfanamides will impair efficacy and I know that Mesalamine is a sulfa derivative--

anyone out there know a good answer?

I'm pretty sure that there is no sulfa at all in mesalamine.  Both sulfasalazine and mesalamine have 5ASA, and in sulfasalazine, the 5ASA is bound to the sulfa component.  Here's info from the CCFA:

Azulphidine has sulfa.... but I thought mesalamine was just a salicylate. I could be totally wrong - I'm a musician, not a doctor!
But - I wanted to say, I take 16 Asacol a day and Rowasa enemas at least twice a week, sometimes more, and I've found probiotics to be really helpful. I've been doing the Asacol for years (16 or so years...? before that, azulphidine) and the probiotics a little more than one year.

Would the sulfa be something that could kill off the probiotics?

Is using something with sulfa similar to putting an 'antibiotic' in my bum every night?

5ASA is NOT a sulfa derivative....it's a salicylate derivitive.

There is metabisulfite as preservative in mesalamine retention enemas (and I think in the supps as well....but a small amount. Azulfidine/sulfasalazine has sulfa and 5ASA.

I would say it wouldn't interfere with the probiotics even before reading the link .

I am just wanting to make sure that I am not killing off all of the expesive probiotics with my expensive retention enemas!

Hey
I was just wondering where you got the 4g Mesalamine enema from, was it from the doctor? Im from the UK and my doctor said the highest dose was 1g.
Also does anyone know if you can take the enema twice a day, will it stay in you while you are walking around?

raad, you would be best to contact your pharmacy to give you the names of what's available exactly in the UK. From what I read, available should be Salofalk (1g foam & 4g liquid suspension), Asacol (1g foam & 4g liquid suspension) and Pentasa..(I think 2g and 4g both liquid suspension)...and possibly generic brands.

Call the pharmacy, have the info ready for your doc to prescribe.

The enema definitely does not "stay in" while I am walking about. Could be very messy!

suppositories can definitely leak, especially if one has any pressure from the least amount of gas...

I use 2g in 59ml Salofalk enemas and I'm in the UK. They are very good - the package is much easier to use than others (e.g. Pentasa). You really need to lay down for at least 30 mins after an enema (and pref more) to allow absorption as far up the colon as possible. I find suppositories are fine to use during the day.
