How many of you 5ASA users have had renal or hepatic function tests?

It would seem that at least renal function should be done before prescribing them and on a regular basis but my doctors never did them. I can get tests done myself for very little cost($20). should I do it? I did have a hepatic function test related to another matter.

I have been on Asacol for 2 years now, and was on Colazal off and on for a year before that. I have also done 2 courses of prednisone during those years, and I have never had a renal function test, or hepatic function test. It has never even been mentioned to me.

Recently, my GI gave me a kit to take to the lab for blood work to have the hepatic function test done, but that is because he wants to add 6mp to my meds. I haven't done it yet because I haven't started the med-I am still on the fence about adding it right now.

But just for 5asa drugs, it has never been brought up.

I have been on and off 5asa for 14 years and was tested to give my brother my kidney and passed every single test for the entire body. They didnt let me donate because of UC but it was nice to know nothing was damaged. It was like a free full body scan. Pretty reassuring.

My gastroenterologist, who subspecializes in IBD treatment, tests twice a year. If you started on 5-ASAs in Dec. 2009, you can reasonably ask to be tested now. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
