hello, all...
here's an update.
So, Mayo ran a Prometheus panel...NOT consistent with UC...so, I still don't think I have it, but I am still not normal. My GI and I tried a 3 week experiment: Lialda, sacchromyces, xifaxan and cholestyramine. It definitely improved things, but still didn't make me normal. So, then my Lyme doc suggested trying Alinia. It cased abd paina nd nausea for the first 4 days, but then it was tolerable. But, on day 6 i developed horrendous diarrhea. Today it's less, but my bowel sounds are going crazy. Has anyone here ever used Alinia? The reserach points to infectious causes in many cases of IBD, and recent publications have shown that xifaxan has induced "remission". Perhaps Alinia helps a subset who have IBD due to protozoal parasites? Just curious if anyone else has ever had a worsening of things on Alinia. Thanks.

I have UC and coincidentally (or maybe not) I ended up with cryptosporidiosis and my GI put me on Alinia. It made the Crypto better, but made my UC worse. By the way, those Prometheus tests aren't as reliable as the doc's make it sound. I have had UC since I was about 9, recently I changed dr's and he ran a test and it came up as not consistent, but he decided not to change the diagnosis because it is so long standing. Hope I was of some help.

We tried to get Aliana but it's not available in Canada. Used flagyl instead. May have helped maybe not.
Interesting that the Mayo used the prometheus test - it was my understanding that many docs there completely discount it. It's not very reliable.
As for the Alinia, it's worth a try - I believe it's only a three day course?

I already had a negative ASCA and pANCA during my first "episode" of pancolitis, 10 days into Moxatag (amoxicillin) for chronic Lyme. 11 months later, with "idiopathic colitis" on biopsy, the prometheus panel was negative. Now I am being sent to a Mayo GI doc. We'll see what he or she thinks about it.
I finished day 7 of Alinia. No stool yesterday, but 1 episode of near diarrhea today, so I guess I am not cured.
