Azathioprine and mosquito bites

Hello everyone

Im on AZA and my feet have been bitten by mosquitos.  I was bitten 6 times on my left foot during the night, almost 4 weeks ago - and the bites are still itching! It is a nightmare.  Bites have never lasted this long before!

I have been putting creams and anti-septic lotions on the bites but to no avail...they are still itching away.

I am guessing this is due to the azathioprine. Has anyone had this problem?

I also take Imuran or Aza and no, I have never noticed any change in healing or any side effect for that matter. Sorry I can't be of much help.

I am just very sensitive to bites, etc.  If they look infected - see a doctor.  To stop scratching them (and you should never scratch them) try Calmaseptic if you haven't already!  Ask at the pharmacy!

I heal a little slowly, but mosquito bites are nothing. If I don't touch them they go away within a couple hours at least.

Prep H helps them go away but if they're still there maybe you're sensitive or something.

You could just be more sensitive...I'm like that with poison ivy.

However I rarely get reactions from mosquito bites. I used to work with them in heavily infested areas, and I would feel the things bite me, but no bumps later.

Mosquitos don't like me for some reason. They bite everyone else around me but they leave me alone! I always joke that they don't like my drugs :) But every once in a while I get a brave one. I don't itch anymore then normal and in fact, I hardly even notice I have one. (I'm on 6mp which is similiar to AZA)

It sounds like you are sensitive to their excretions, maybe even allergic to them. But I agree with the others........do not itch them! Or they will never go away. Have you tried Benedryl cream or spray to calm the itch?

That green aloe gel you use on sunburn works for me.

You may be a big histamine producer-- if the bites swell a lot & keep bothering you. I always carry a tube of Benadryl lotion with me on outings to prevent reactions from mosquito bites; it contains a strong anti-histamine. One summer evening yrs back I got several bites on both feet while wearing sandals, before UC. That made me miserable from itching/swelling so I mostly quit wearing sandals outdoors afterward. I think there's a lot to be said for Sherry's experience-- it seems that mosquitos prefer some of us to others, alas! You might want to investigate insect repellent products if you spend major time outdoors, and/or stay close to a citronella candle after dark. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

After reading this last week I sat out and the old deer flies got me.  My hand is stil swollen some.  The cream with antihistaimine helped some but I think the Calmaseptic was the best.  Staying inside now!

Deer flies are evil.
So are horseflies. Whenever I swim in my boyfriend's pool I get attacked by them.

One thing I've noticed that always works for me is a product I used to get at WalMart.

Pomada de La Compana
(Dr. Bell's Pomade)

This stuff gets rid of ant bites, mosquito bites, zits, any kind of rash, you name it. I've been using it for years.

If there is none in your area, I know eBay has some listings of it. Goes for around $10 or so for a little more than 2 ounces.
