I been doing tons of reading about
UP but I still have concerns. I am 26 gay male who enjoys anal sex but am worried having UP will hinder that. I talked to my doc and he said it's fine no need to worry. Well in trying it I noticed blood on my partner and we stopped. It never hurts or feels uncomfortable it just leaves blood. I'm thinking this could be bad ?
A lot of people talk about
"flare ups" and I am confused. The only thing I notice with UP is slighty bloody stool in the morning and only on the first movement. Doc said I have a very mild case. He said "a 2 out of 10, 10 being worse."
I'm still learning. I am a health nut who eats right and works out 5 days a week. The doc tells me everytime it's nothing I did cause he knows I keep blaming myself.

Uc and Up (as well as Chrons) is thought to be an auto immune disease. It is not caused by food or lifestyle. However, there can be triggers that activate the disease. Some of those triggers are over usage of antibiotics and/or Nsaids, food poisoning or some other outside factor. So definately do NOT blame yourself for getting this.
I suggest you read up more about
this in our resource section as well as the ccfa.org
I can't help you on the anal sex thing because I honestly don't know if you are harming yourself but it seems to me that it might be wise to avoid anal sex until you are in remission. Or at least take it easy. I'm thinking that the friction of sex may be causing issues with the bleeding.

UP can also be triggered by bacteria, viruses or other infections, so unless you've used only condoms, it's possible you had an infection initially.
Doctors do check for invaders, so hope you had that done as well.
And that can happen to straight anal sex participants...
One pretty much has to have a predisposition for autoimmune disease. Stress doesn't help, and I can't see that having anal sex would be a positive.
But using a condom at least will help prevent any transmission of whatever...seems it would be best for your partner as well regardless.
I don't buy into the food culprits as triggers for flares...but it would be wise to eat well balanced as possible.
Fibre supplements are a good thing to use...bulks the stool allowing it to pass easier.
Probiotics are also a huge plus...keeps the digestive bacterial flora in balance.
You didn't mention medications...I hope you're on them, and I would suggest both oral and rectal. If you can take 5ASA...that would be your best bet to start.
Regarding working out...if it's extreme, maybe back off a bit and do a lighter form of exercise.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!
This disease is so frustrating, often coming out of nowhere, it seems . and then the remissions, sometimes hard-won by meds, supplements, careful eating, whatever,.... and then eventually again another flare will come, in my case, for no discernable reason most of the time.
I believe that food doesn't cause the disease but that when I am flaring some foods can make me more uncomfortable. It's been years since my level of disease was called "proctitis".... I think I popped sulfasalazine and didn't eat differently, live differently, etc.
I since have found fiber and probiotics to be helpful, (as Qunicy said) and I stay away from potentially irritating foods when I'm flaring, even though those foods are the things the rest of the world declares "healthy" - salads, raw fruits and veggies, whole grains, etc.
As far as sex, I would think common sense should guide you. If the area is painful, or if the "EWWW" factor outweighs the pleasure, different activities might be better for the moment.
Ask if you have other questions.... it's a tough thing to deal with.

Thank you guys. I do work out hard and i tell myself to back off a bit but i have a little OCD when it comes to that. As far as Probiotics i never even heard of them so ill have to do some research. I been with the same guy exclusive for 4 years now so i ruled out STD's and such. We don't use condoms being in a LTR but we do use common sense. If there is any blood we stop. The doctor pretty much told me "live you life like you have been and stop worrying about
it so much." So i am making progress. Baby steps i guess.
Thanks for the info/links.

You are lucky to have such a mild case of this crappy disease. My MO has been to do my best to carry on with life as if I am fine. Since diagnosed with UC years ago and having IBS too, I have moved cities, travelled a great deal, lived abroad a few years, completed an MA and a PhD, written 2 books, and had shocking amounts of sex. Enjoy life no matter what your *****y colon tries to do.

Reason for edit: We are not here to judge other people's lifestyle. We are here for support regardless how one chooses to live their lives.

Have you been tested for infection? Many of the pathogens that cause infectious proctitus go completely unnoticed especially in men.(like chlamydia) I know it might be a long shot but infectious proctitus can be misdiagnosed as ulcerative proctitus. Unlike UP it is curable. It is also becoming very common in gay men or so my gay brother told me. Anal sex could also infect you with other pathogens not normally classed as STDs. Might be worth checking out. People can harbor infectious bacteria in their digestive track that has no effect on their health but may harm you.
