When I had a UC flare last year my gastro prescribed Xifaxan for 10 days. It was supposed to supplement the 5-ASA I was already taking. After reading the package insert I didn't feel thrilled about
trying it-- the insert mentioned possible bleeding problems. When I inquired here on the forum, Rey replied that it helped her daughter. Other comments were mixed. Luckily, the 5-ASA + cautious diet helped me to get back to remission w/o Xifaxan. (It was developed in Europe as a treatment for travelers' diarrhea, but has come into use by IBD gastros in the last 5 yrs.) I'd say that you have to beware in case it makes you feel worse; then be sure to contact your doctor right away. Are you taking other med(s) in addition? / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
