Hi I am new to this website & wanted to know those of you who are on or have tried 6 MP , whether it worked and how long it took for you to see results.  I tried it one other time and after a week became very ill so I stopped it, I was not sure if that is what made me ill or was a coincidence since I was only taking it briefly.  Anyway, I am trying it again one more time & what to see how others fared with this drug. I appreciate ur input !! thanks.

I am taking Azathioprine which is the parent compound of 6MP. I believe the time in which the drug starts working is highly variable between individuals. For me it was a solid four months. In hindsight I wish it didn't take me so long to make up my mind to start taking it, because it meant that I had to stay on prednisone all those extra months while the Aza kicked in.

It took about three months to "kick in" along with the prednisone. It kept me in remission for two years, but then I started to flare yearly and then twice a year, etc. I do have a friend who has remained in remission for over ten years on 6MP....so I wish you the best of luck!

Scott: I agree with you 100% I should have started months ago instead of just one month ago. I am doing well now but I am still on prednisone, waiting for 6mp to be fully effective so I can taper off hopefully.

Sorry to be the downer but I took it for about 6 months and no improvement.

I've been on it for nearly 4 years. It took about 3 months for it to start working properly for me but I can't get into the thereudic (sp?) range so it keeps my flares minor but I still flare. However, I did hit a nice solid remission for 1 1/2 years.

I also took it for about 5 months and no help. I was taking 50 mg. and it was doing nothing so when tried to take higher dose (which blood tests said would be therapeutic) I got very sick from it so doctor took me off.  He said 50 mg. was not strong enough and I could not tolerate higher.

I took 6mp for oh... probably 5-6 years, until just this last month. I was also on all the meslamine type drugs: asacol, colazol, Pentasa for the longest time... and now I'm on Lialda. None of it really works very well, and I generally flare when I get stressed and am drawn off of the flare by prednisone (which unfortunately alters with my mental state). I'm not sure if the 6mp worked or not. I know it was not working recently. First of all every few months I've had to have my blood checked to make sure my liver was handling the 6mp okay. Recently I had blood work to check how effective the drug was, and also if there was room to increase the dosage without bothering my liver. It turned out that the 6mp was not being very helpful for me, and it would be too dangerous to raise the dosage of that medicine. I made a judgment call on my own (probably ill advised) that if the 6mp wasn't effective, I didn't want to take it and have any extra risks from that medicine.

I'm hesitant to say this, but I do think that the 6mp worked for me for a while. Last year I thought that the 6mp might have been causing fatigue so I tried dropping the dosage (with my doctor's approval) and my symptoms did flare up. I also am fairly confident in saying that meslamine drugs do very little for me, so it was most likely the 6mp that gave me temporary relief at some points in the 7+ years I've had this issue so far.

In my opinion I'd say that the drug is worth a shot.
