8 YR OLD SONS SCOPE

He had his scope and they said his large intestine is great. No ulceration nothing(I figured this). He seen some redness on the bottom part of his small intestine. He didn't see an ulcers there but he wants to see what the biopsies say. He said it is possible for him to have Crohn's in his stomach and small intestine or just the small intestine and he would have throwing up issues. He said he can't see some 20 feet of small intestine. He said he is going to do a Upper GI with small bowel follow through and the test were he swallows the pill with the camera and it goes through his small intestine. He said he is going to do these tests even if the biopsies come back negative. He said it concerns him because he has chronic inflammation and I have UC. I have to wait 7-10 days for the results. I said can you put him on some meds and he said not until he rules out Crohn's. He is throwing up (like he has the flu) since Friday. I said this needs to be solved. He can't go to school like this. He said he will get him in right away for the tests but to wait for the biopsie results. Keeping my hopes up but why would his small intestines be red? I wish they would solve this. Thanks everyone for all your support. Will let you know what they say.

Was he tested for Celiac via a blood draw? I am sure the biopsies can tell you as well though...

I was wondering about celiac as well....a very good friend of mine has a son who was diagnosed with celiac at age 8, up until that age he had episodes of what they thought was IBS, but then he started vomiting frequently, finally was tested for celiac and was positive for that disease.  He adheres very strictly to a gluten-free diet, is now 15 and doing wonderfully. 

It must be agony for you to see your son go through this!  It is so hard waiting for test results, but it does sound like your doctor is willing to run as many tests as it will take to get a definitive answer.  Hang in there.....((hugs))

I know they did allergy testing. They said it came back fine. He has no allergies. I will ask to make sure about celiac. Thanks everyone. I do love his doctor. He is concerned and I feel is doing the right things. I think he is kind of stumped too. He isn't doing to well after his scope. He threw up everything he ate last night and he had one piece of toast with some apple juice and he says his belly hurts and you can tell he doesn't feel good. sad

Your son's symptoms sound like my friend's son-- he was throwing up everything. This was before capsule camera & endoscopy so all the doctor could really do was to stabilize him with IV fluids & gradually get him onto a careful diet. He was sick for a couple months. Then he never had any major GI issues after that until his 30s, when endoscopy was available. That's when the gastro decided that his jujeunum is the problem area, harder to examine. But he recovered again & did not develop IBD. I hope this story gives you some comfort. It was hard for my friend to get thru this with her son in his school year so I have an idea what you're dealing with. Then you have to stay positive for his siblings, too. Poor boy. I hope he is feeling better soon. His symptoms are kind of strange for IBD, kind of sounds like a bug, I hope it is a bug and he can treat it with some medication and not worry about IBD.

That is what I thought. His symptoms are nothing like mine and my friend who has CD doesn't have symptoms like his they are like mine. I don't think it is a bug because he has been sick since about Feb of this year. My husband has gastitis and ulcers in his stomach and he gets car sick all the time. If he gets worked up he will get sick also. I'm hoping my son just inherited this from him. (I wish he had nothing wrong). But the doc said he will put him on the meds my husband is on if they don't find CD.

It sounds like he's in good hands and that he'll get all the pertinent tests to help with a diagnosis.

I too hope it's not IBD....and that the meds will help ease his symptoms. He certainly needs a break from this.

I'm also curious if he might also have a hiatal hernia?

No hernia. He had one in November that he got fixed(it was by his groin) that was the first thing I asked his GI and he said he would be able to tell with the Upper scope. Nope, I was hoping it was just that.
