Before current drugs

Ive been taking asacol for about 6 months I think maybe more, and today I was thinking what did they give you for this say 30-40 years ago?

I cant imagine having this disease without any drug option.

Well, In 1910 Diarrhea was the 3 leading cause of death in country so....

And I know a woman who had UC (has since had her colon removed) and was on pred for 10 years - !!
I dn't know about 30 years, but 27 years ago, before Asacol, azulfidine - sulfasalazine - was prescribed. I was put on it it for UP in June of 1983.

I think when drug choices ran out people had permanent ostomies. I do know a woman who stayed on prednisone for 20 years as a maintenance drug. She had jpouch surgery 8 years ago and is doing fine.

I don't know but my grandfather had his colon removed in 1972 after being diagnosed with uc. It didn't go well and his life was very difficult after the operation.
