Went to my GI today to discuss a flare that I've been in for the last few weeks...apparently I've had Crohns for the last 5 years and didn't realize it!
When I had a colonoscopy in 2006, my GI noted that I had ileum involvement as well as healthy patches of colon in between ulcerated sections. I remember him mentioning this after the colonoscopy, but I thought he was just telling me that he wasn't 100% sure if it was UC or Crohn's...but not that he was officially changing my diagnosis! I'm not really sure that it matters all that much...my symptoms are the same whether it's called UC or Crohn's but still, it'll weird saying that I have Crohn's and not Ulcerative Colitis.
Luckily, he wrote a scrip for SF Rowasa (sulfite-free???) and Asacol HD, so hopefully these 2 new meds will clear everything up for me.
The interesting thing he told me though is this: With UC, you can start off as a mild case and then get full-blown sick very quickly and without much warning. However, with Crohn's, you typcially stay about the same level of severity throughout your life once dx. So this might explain why I've been able to get away with being sketchy with meds for a long time.
Anyway, just thought I'd share. Crazy!
