I'm inquiring for my 39 year old son who's had uc about 4 years. He has no access to internet, and does not have good medical, so i would appreciate your help. He takes mesalamine daily. He wants to know if there is any reason to take it once u have a flare up and what to do once it happens?

From what I know (I'm a newbie too) mesalamine is a maintenance drug for uc. It's usually what people are started on when first diagnosed. If he is starting to flare he should get seen by doctor. Maybe dosage can be adjusted or a new drug can be used.

From my personal experience I would suggest you tell him no to let the flare go on without acting on it.

What mesalamine med is he on?
In any case, mesalamine is something we generally take all the time. It's supposed to keep us in remission longer, and I believe it's one reason my flares haven't been as bad as my first one. So - the short answer is yes, he should stay on it.

Depending on how much he's taking, he might be able to increase the dose to help combat a flare.
Where is he located? In the resource section at the top of this forum there are patient assistance programs if he needs financial help for meds.....
