My son has strep and guess what i got it. I've been sick since Tuesday and I can't stand it. I go to the doc today to get antibiotics but I'm scared to go on these and cause more of a flare but man I can't stand the pain anymore. What ones are okay?

There is no "one" antibiotic for UC sufferers. I never was negatively affected with any antibiotic when I had UC. But, you do need antibiotics, strep will not go away on its own.

Eck! How horrible! I used to get strep a lot but because I also have MVP (mitral valve prolapse) my primary had me get my tonsils out - she was afraid the constant exposure to the bacteria would damage my heart. In one year, I had 6 cases of strep so I can feel your pain. But I learned that any of the 'cillians and 'cyclines are typically bad for Uc'ers. Some can tolerate Cipro and others can't (me being one of them) and I find I do okay with Levaquin or the Z-pack. However, if you are on probiotics, you should increase your dosage so it won't affect your Uc as much.

Red, you sound exactly like me! I had strep constantly for about 2 years, in my mid-20's. ALWAYS on antibiotics. Finally got my tonsils out when I was 26 (awful, awful, painful experience!) & have never had strep since. I often wonder if the constant antibiotic therapy had anything to do with me developing UC. And yes, WiMom- antibiotics are a must! Just let your GP know about your UC, & hopefully a z-pak would work??? A short powerful course, you know?

I just finished up a course of 10 days of twice/daily Amoxicillin. It was only a couple days before the D was back full force. My dr okayed using Imodium up to 3 times/daily. It was a lifesaver. I would take 2 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon and it really helped reduce the severity and frequency. Oh yes, I also doubled my probiotics and my Lialda during the course of the antibiotics. Now my sinus infection is bad and dr is suggesting more sinus surgery. Waiting for CT of sinuses to see.

Eva Lou, yep ever since I had my tonsils out I don't get strep anymore, nor do I get sore throats when I get sick. It's been great! I was 30 when I had mine out and you are not kidding when you say it was awful experience! Sooooo painful! And yes, I do believe that over antibiotic usage triggered my Uc as well. I got Uc when I was 22 and at that time I was always sick and on antibiotics at least once a month....I remember one time I even got a yeast infection in my throat from too many antibiotics, lordy was that awful!

I have strep and they gave me penacillin. Said I should be fine. I have D with the strep and with UC. Why not get it with the penacillin. shocked   I just hope I feel better tomorrow. This is so painful.

I would suggest you get the shot version of penicillin rather than the pills so it doesn't go through your digestive system. That is what I did last year and noticed no difference in UC symptoms.
