Vicodin 7.5 750 normalizes my UC - long term issues ?

7.5 - 750 each night for headaches from my Thrombus results in completely normal bowel function. I wish I had taken this instead of prednisone. I am aware of the 4000 mg limit for the tylenol in each pill ( 750 ) so that means no more than 5 pills and I usually take 1-2. But beyond that has anyone had problems from long term use ? I see on the web many UC people pointing out how this helps.

It's an opiate-type medication that can slow/imobilise the colon. It would not replace prednisone, but is a pain killer and could definitely help with gut spasming if that's an issue for you. It won't deal with inflammation at all.


Can you not take any of the 5ASA nmeds? or was that contraindicated with your other health issues?

Agreed, it's not a treatment for UC but can help with the pain and diarrhea.

Everything that slows my GI tract improves my condition. Librax, Mebeverine, Vicodin. I noticed the Vicodin seemed to improve the inflamation short term, time will tell I suppose if its just a coincidence.

It won't improve your inflammation...yes, coincidence. It will, however, improve some of your symptoms. If you don't have a bm, you don't see blood, mucus, diarrhea...etc.

Can you not take 5ASA meds?  If not, can you put that in your siggie if possible?

I am on so many different meds its crazy but thank God the blood thinner is no longer interfering with my UC battle. I put the major ones in my sig.

I would strongly suggest you try the rectal meds....if you can take the 5ASA, that would be helpful.

Regarding blood thinners, the fish oil will encourage that as well....??

Fish oil does = blood thinners, they were on the no go list 2 weeks prior to a recent surgery I had, for that reason.

Right anything healthy gets disallowed by the blood thinners. Spinach, Sunflower oil / seeds, Vitamin C the list goes on and on.
So I take a bunch of stuff and go to the coumadin clinic and make sure I am still between 2.0 and 3.0 - so far so good.

5ASA = Mesalamine ? I tried that and a quart of blood came out and that was the last straw for all forms of mesalamine, requested sulfasalazine and Librax and the month long bleeding halted within hours. I had been using hydrocortisone rectally and it seemed to help not harm but the night poops continued all thru october after the month long august flare until......I started taking Vicodin regularily.

So glad to just sleep thru the night now.

After I had my hip replacement surgery in April, I was on pain meds for a while - and they definitely helped slow down my gut. Since I figured I was dealing with some residual inflammation that was taking its slow time healing, having my GI tract slow down some helped promote some healing, I felt (I'd gone into mini-flare prior to the surgery out of sheer nerves so was doing nightly enemas, to the fascination of the ortho ward nurses! lol)

So, aguy, I think I understand what you're meaning. Also - just to be able to sleep does its part to heal!

But I would be careful, long-term - the addiction would not be fun to deal with.

Right, read some threads on the withdrawal earlier tonight, reminds of my benzo withdrawal from Ativan. So going to start tapering it down, no need to go cold turkey and put myself thru the physical shock.
