Anyone here taken Prevacid or other heartburn meds?

I've been having major heartburn issues lately. Like almost every day and lasting all day. I've decided I need to start taking something because Tums/Mylanta as remedies is just not cutting it anymore.

I'm just curious if anyone has taken any of the over the counter heartburn medications, or specifically Prevacid. We always have to be careful with the meds we take. However, I actually heard that some docs have prescribed Prevacid to treat UC?

Any advice/recommendations are appreciated.

I don't take Prevacid but I do take Prilosec OTC. I've been on Prilosec for about 3 years due to acid reflux/gastritis. I only start having issues with it when I have to increase it such as I had to about a month ago after starting on Allopurinol. But now that I am back to my regular dose, I am doing much better. I don't think the dose I'm at helps or hinders my Uc to be honest.

I also take Prilosec OTC ... has worked for me for almost 3 years. I was diagnosed with a small ulcer where the stomach meets up with the small intestine (don't know the name of it) and while it is healed, I still take the Prilosec because of the increase in acid I have, even though my UC is in remission.

I took tums like crazy and then zantac over the counter. Both worked but I felt like long term your body just kicks out more acid to compensate. This makes you need them more and you start getting heart burn again. Losing weight, better diet and quiting smoking finally got me off them. Untreated heartburn is not a good idea though.

Didn't say what UC meds you are on but all the 5asa/mesalamine drugs like asacol,lialda and colazal rely on lower PH in the stomach and small intestine to prevent release of the drug until it gets to the colon. Pretty sure some of the drugs warn about taking antacids. Better ask the doctor or pharmacist

My doctors didn't seem too concerned with me taking Prilosec Rx. The only worry was that it inhibits the absorption of iron and calcium (I think), but doesn't affect UC directly.

I take Zantac and find it works very wall. It can be taken twice a day.

I did take omeprazole for a while...felt weird on it.
I also took Pariet...worked well, but Zantac seems to be my fave.

So I took the first one at lunch today and my heartburn was gone within a few hours. It's a 14 day program though and it says not to take it for more than 14 days.

So what happens after that? Does the heartburn just come back? :/

It can if you don't lower the acid in your stomach. Remember...they are only to change the acidity in the stomach to help prevent erosion of the esophagus and to help lessen the inflammation of the stomach, or stomach ulcers caused by h. pylori, both of which can be exacerbated from stomach acid.

The mechanical problem (faulty sphincter at the esophagus/stomach junction), isn't helped by this treatment.

I have been on Prilosec prescription from my primary care doctor for GERD for about 6 years - one a day. Once ina while I sitll have breakthrough acid or heartburn and I use Rolaids!
