Balasalzide disodium is compound that resists breakdown at low PH levels like the stomach and small intestine. Silimar in this way to the coating on asacol. Once in the colon it is biologically broken down into mesalimine(5ASA) and another compound. Like Sulfaslazine. You can actually put the capsule contents on apple sauce and eat it.
You can take it on an empty stomach but it gave me heartburn and I found the pills went down better with food. Some of the literature speculates that it works better with food but who knows.
The rough equivalent is 6.75 g colazal is 2.4 gr asacol. 2.25 is a pretty low dose. In the UK where colazal is approved for maintenance, 3gr is the starting maintenance dosage. It is called colazide there. Here is some drug information from Europe:
www.virtualcancercentre.com/drugs.asp?drugid=3141#Dose-advice-of-Colazide www.epgonline.org/viewdrug.cfm/drugId/DR003014/language/LG0001/drugName/COLAZIDE www.medicines.org.uk/emc/medicine/21236/SPC/colazide%20750mg%20capsules/ I found a study(can't find the link) where Colazal and I probiotic was more effective than drug or probiotic alone for preventing relapse of diverticulous. I thought it was interesting because it shows that they can work together.
