Calcium, Vit D, and Fish Oil debate

I just sent a list of OTC and supplements to my doctor to get the needed documentation for the 2011 flex plan. She came back and excluded Calcium, Vit D, and Fish Oil saying these have nothing to do with having UC?

Has anyone come across any credible articles stating otherwise?

In general I know there's a connection between IBD and Vit D deficiency. The Vit D also helped with my fatigue. I got advise to increase the Vit D on this forum. I heard some medications can cause a lose of bone density and it can be a complication from having UC. The nutritionist I saw recommended the fish oil as it's an anti-inflammatory and may keep me in remission longer.

I read a study about vitamin D being denied to rats with UC and those without it died, however I was taking a lot when I flared. Calcium really has me spooked because I had learned it could slow down your GI tract and was taking it 3 times daily when I had a stroke and I read how calcium plays a role in clot formation but no studies have really confirmed that.

I will not be taking high doses of calcium again, regardless of whether or not I am on high dose prednisone.

Is your doctor trained in the field of supplements and vitamins? Time and time again we expect our doctors to be able to make decisions regarding diet, supplements, and vitamins. It's not their field of expertise.

First of all there is no debate about the vitamin D. We have gone over this so many times and there are many threads on this forum about that topic that you can easily look up. Or you can google 'vitamin d Crohn's', or 'vitamin d ulcerative colitis'. While you are at it google vitamin d with cancer, heart disease, MS, fibromyalgia, or just about anything else.

As napacabs said earlier the fish oil studies are more ambiguous. But almost all nutrition studies are ambiguous. These studies have been popping up for years but nothing ever comes of it. Twenty years ago there was a huge placebo controlled double blind study to see if selenium would prevent skin cancer. The results were that it prevented major cancers such as bowel and lung by over 60 percent. They had to terminate the study because it was considered inhumane not to extend selenium to the placebo group. Google ‘selenium cancer’ and scores of other published studies will show up.

But nothing came of it. Follow up studies were ambiguous. Every time a study comes out showing effectiveness of some natural cure there is almost always a follow-up showing that it is ineffective. The best explanation might be from Andrew Weil. He says that yes the studies are sometimes positive, sometimes negative, but the same is true for studies for conventional drugs. When conventional drugs such as antidepressants are compared to placebo, the placebo often wins. But those studies showing the ineffectiveness of conventional drugs are not as publicized as the studies concerning impotence of natural remedies.

I do not cope well with omega3 oils. In fact for me they are highly inflammatory. Probably everyone with his own reactions. I do supplement with Vit D - even if most of us UC-ers tend to develop kidney sones - and Vit D is not recommended for those with those tendencies.
