The article makes it sound like he is the only one to try this method. He is not the first.

Not surprising that the GI from Chicago is so against people trying things like this. What this guy did was a little more extreme than most (he got the eggs from a girl's stool) but it's not like they are not available through other means. This fits in with my experience of GIs not appreciating informed proactive patients. It annoys them to no end, and I guess in the US threatens to take away a good chunk of business. Annoying.

I was watching the show "Monsters Inside Me" and this one guy was suffering terribly from asthma and allergies to the point where his life was put on hold. So he went to the most under developed country he could find that was notorious for hookworm. His sister told him about how hookworms can turn his immune system around to attack the worms instead of his lungs. So he went to this country and walked around bare foot in feces. He came home to find out that he was infected and within a couple of months his asthma cleared as well as his allergies. He now harvests his hookworm eggs and sells them to whoever wants them. He did mention that he has to monitor his health very closely every day because of the side effects of the hookworm.

I don't know if I could ever get myself to purposely infect myself but hookworm therapy is becoming more popular over the years.

SHerry, I believe that's Jasper Lawrence, who owns Autoimmune Therapies. We have been very close to trying this ourselves but haven't yet. It's something we continue to consider however. As for Jasper monitoring his own health daily, he never mentioned that to us. In fact, he said the level of infestation he "offers" (?) is so low that the CDC has instructed Drs. who see it in their practices not to even bother treating it. Side effects are apparently transient, but it's new so who knows. Personally I feel more comfortable with it than some of the meds, but everyone's different.

Killcolitis, I think you're right and it was his aunt not his sister (my bad) that told him about the show on BBC regarding hookworms.
