Recovery from colectomy

I am just wondering about what the recovery from a total colectomy is like.

My wife is thinking about taking a new job and would therefore be unable to take any time off (FMLA). If remicade doesn't work for me I will be looking at surgery sooner rather than later.

For people who have had the surgery, what was it like. How long were you in the hospital? How long before you were able to drive? Were you able to take care of your kids fairly soon after?

 

You should really post this on the Ostomy board. I think you would get a better response over there, more people who have been through it... I think the amount of time it takes to recover is individual but there is probably an average. It's definitely not an easy surgery - as far as I know, but it seems like the only option for some of us and it can give you a much better quality of life.
