Checking in on what is ok and what is concerning-

 

My daughter has been having 1-2 soft, sometimes loose poops

a day. Occasional small amt of blood- this can come and go.

 

Then the next day she can have a formed poop- no issues and then

the next day the loose poop.

 

No tummy aches, no urgency etc.

 

Is this a problem? Is it diet related?

 

What do you do if this happens to you?

 

I have Cortenemas but am not sure if this is when I need to use it as I would not really call this a flare but then I don't want it to turn into one.

 

She is on 6-MP and VSL.

Very difficult to tell.... have you been celebrating holidays and have a lot of holiday treats around the house.....? (We sure do!)
What I would do is to increase my VSL a bit and perhaps my fiber.

If that didn't help in 3-4 days I'd start the Cortenemas - maybe she'd be able to do a really short course even, but ... blood means the start of something for me 99% of the time. (Could be hemmies for her, aggravated by the loose stools.)

How much VSL is she on.... could you add another 1/2 packet as an experiment...? As you say, it might not be the start of a flare at all, but why take the chance?

I'd suggest you start the enemas asap. Blood, albeit small, is still fragile tissue. Has she been on them before?

The poo texture/consistency can be food related as well as stress related....in conjunction with inflammation related.

I agree about the "fragile tissue"- so how long would you use enemas?

 

Typically after using the enema for 1-2 days things return to "normal" but then the

problem comes again...

 

So how long do you use enemas- I worry if we have formed stool and I am using enemas- feels like overkill-

I rarely have flares with bleeding...I was shocked after 14 years without bleeding when I ended up having it again. Once was when I tapered off an estrogen patch, and the other was when I was sick with 3 colds in one season, taking cold FX and a whole bunch of other stuff that might have exacerbated things more than I intended..oh, and it was Christmas..lol.

Regarding your daughter's blood....does she have it with a more formed poo? or along a formed stool?

Is it the second stool of the day that she has blood? or the first?

Is the blood on the paper, dripping into the toilet or on the stool and on the paper?

Regarding the steroid enemas....you shouldn't just use them for 2 days in a row. There should be some "plan"...I'm on 5ASA, and if I had any hint of a flare, I'd use them for at least 3 weeks nightly.

Now, with your daughter...maybe a week and a half. If all is good regarding the blood and she's still having up and down stools, it's possibly flare related and you should continue maybe for another week or so.
If the stools become more "consistent" in shape, not related to food..then it's inflammation.

If the bleeding stops, the bms go to maybe once a day but the consistency regarding looseness, firmness, etc varies, then it's maybe a combo of flare, ibs and food.

Clear as mud, right?

Is she on any fibre supplements?

When I see blood/tissuey stuff it is with a soft/loose poop

the blood is on the TP and when I flush I can see some tissuey/red stuff in the toilet

It can be the 1st or 2nd but I would say the 2nd- some days she only has 1 poop

 

I used an enema last night and she has not had a poop yet- it is 7:30pm so she probably won't go today.

My plan is to use the enemas for a week or so until we have consistently good poops.

 

i really wonder how much is related to what she is eating/stress?? Also, we are not on any fiber supplements-

Not sure what to use and afraid to introduce anything...

I have used Cortenemas for 2 nights in a row and she has not had any poop in 2 days... I am thinking I should skip a night and see what happens tomorrow... maybe go to every other night??

I'm sure Quincy will address your question about the enemas.

As far as fiber (which helps to bulk up the mushy stool), you can get psylium husk powder in a natural food store and you can start with however tiny amount you want. I started with 1/4 tsp and went up from there so my system could get used to it. Now I never go without it. I just mix it in with whatever I'm drinking, usually tea. It mixes best with something warm (but will also go into cold drinks with a little more vigorous stirring) and you have to drink it right away.

You're welcome! Thank you for the kind words.

Stay on the enemas nightly for at least 2 weeks...you need to be consistent and quit yo-yoing those meds.

The bms can also be IBS related, although, blood isn't IBS.

The no bms is fine...for now. Seems her rectum is calming a bit regarding signals to rush everything out.

She's able to retain the cortenemas? good for her.
The next possible enemas she could try are the foam ones...a bit less steroid dosage in them.

Fibre meaning supplements of whatever kind. I use the metamucil caps..taken with meals. Start small as hekela states.
