humira & staph infection- yuk!

Hi folks! I posted about a week ago about a cellulitis infection in one of my fingers- well, the finger never got better, in fact got much worse! Spent NY's Day at the hospital, getting an abscess drained- with no Lidocaine! It was awful- but, the doctor kindly gave me a Percocet script! After a few more days, the finger was still draining pus, went back to my PC who switched out the Keflex for Bactrim- so far, so good! It's a staph infection that just will not quit. But, it's finally stopped draining, after 3x a day of soaking in hydrogen peroxide & water. And it is getting better- slowly but surely! Of course, I was scheduled for a Humira shot yesterday, but don't dare do it with an open abscess. My GI told me to wait a week, do the shot, then resume the normal bi-weekly schedule. Now I'm hoping this glitch in dosing doesn't screw up my UC- which has been good lately, despite the heavy-duty antibiotic use. I am looking forward to a wknd of down time, let me tell you! Hope the rest of you are doing better than I!

How awful! Well, I'd rather risk the antibiotics....I know of a lady who had a staph infection that never healed...she had to have her finger amputated in part, then eventually the whole finger.

I'd hold off on the humira. Can you start maybe with some rectal meds in the meantime? Maybe a larger or different probiotic dosage?

Thinking of you....I hope this next while kicks it to the curb! Good the draining has finished.

Sorry that you got hit by staph, Eva Lou! Yep, I'd stay away from Keflex if possible. I think taking that bugger for recurrent tonsilitis in the 1970s led me down the path to UC. Then while on hydrocortisone in early 1990s, I got a nasty systemic staph infection-- had to fight that off with Cipro!!!!! Staph is the pits-- ya gotta keep after it & wipe it all out. I hope you get over this ASAP, nasty way to start a new year. Hang in there! / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

thanks buds- it's getting better, but sooooo slowly! At least it's finally stopped draining. I'm going to the health food store today, & they have a probiotic you take for a 7 day course, specifically for use on antibiotics. I may pick it up. Can't hurt, you know?

Wow, you're going through so much! I hope the Bactrim takes care of it and the probiotics do their thing!

     Hi Eva!  Sorry to hear you have been so ill.  Glad that the Humira is still working for you!  Hope you don't go into a flare from the antibiotics.

I got cellulitis while on 6mp over a year ago. Sounds like yours went bad quickly.

about your probiotics-my spouse is currently on antibiotics for a deep gash and our family doc recommended Florastor to take at the same time. Luckily I already had some (for me) so I could share.
Is this the one you're going to get?

I usually take Ultimate Flora Critical Care, which is a high bifido one- and it works pretty well! But, they were out of it at the hlth. food store, so I had to grab some Ultimate Flora Critical Colon, Bifido Max! We'll see. It's 80 billion cultres per capsule. They did have the antibiotic one, that 7 day course. But it's like $60 for a weeks worth of pills! So I just got the daily one. I imagine it'll be similar to Critical Care, maybe a bit more helpful, as it's Critical Colon! I had some Florastor samples I got from a drug rep at work, about 2 weeks worth & loved them. But that stuff is super expensive too, plus it's hard to find. I'm halfway thru the course of Bactrim today- things are alright, but definitely have increased gas. Seems like I never go "into" a flare anymore, it's just a constant semi-flare, some days are better than others, you know? Which I'm glad about, but still.... just wish this lingering inflammation would finally quit!
