Which antidepressant is better? Am considering this, nervous system on OT..it's always something...!

It's only me again!

Which is better, do have another doctor's appt next week for this reason, was thinking of getting this prescription. With this UC, sometimes it seems, I live in my head! Does UC does tend to do that? Affect the nervous system too?
My ignorance again, but this forum does give me great considerations to think of! Your thoughts and suggestions, please!

I don't think that the UC itself actually affects the nervous system, but I DO think that all the crap that comes along with UC can affect one's psyche. It's no fun living with urgent, frequent, diarrhea and feeling like you can't go anywhere or do anything. And, it does make you feel physically ill, which also messes with your mood.

I'm in a really solid remission, and don't find that my UC affects my mood, my life, my decisions, etc at all. But, when I was in my first, really severe flare, I ended up going on Zoloft. I was about 8 weeks post-partum, had not been diagnosed, and was sick, sick, sick. Now, I don't know if I'd had troubles with post partum anxiety if I hadn't been so ill, but I think it definitely contributed to it.

There is no "better" antidepressant. The doctor selects the AD that best matches your symptoms of depression. For example, some AD's do a better job of treating anxiety, but if you don't have anxiety you don't need that particular AD. It's very important that you be able to articulately describe your depression symptoms to your doctor, and he/she will pick the AD best suited for YOUR symptoms.

I was going to post what notsosicklygirl did. There are some Crohn's patients taking Wellbutrin as treatment for their crohn's because it has shown to be anti-tnf. Although you have to take the regular wellbutrin, not the SR or XL, for whatever reason that didn't help the crohn's symptoms.

Just an idea to discuss with your doctor, maybe kill 2 birds with one stone!

I read a post on the Chron's board the other day that said wellbutrin can actually help IBD. I would definitely try wellbutrin if I were going to take another medication. I don't know much about these antidepresseents but I have heard they can cause weight gain and I am already trying to lose a few.

Yes I really want to try it, so can we get that from a GP or do we have to see a shrink ?

I'm taking Lexapro. But then I have social anxieties. Lexapro works great for people who have social anxieties. It is also supposed to come with fewer side effects.

Yes. Anti-depressants can cause weight gain. It was a concern of mine too.

Wellbutrin for me is the

It didn't hinder or help my Uc but it made me an emotional wreck. I cried constantly and I began to have some very dark thoughts. But my body is weird and reacts strangely to things. Though, I have heard that this is a good med. I got my script from my GP.

I was on a low dose of Effexor XR and I feel it helped my UC. I'm an anxious person and it really calmed my gut. I was on it for a year and I felt great, no anxious thoughts, gut felt great. I went off of it 6 months ago b/c I was gaining weight on it. In the future I would go back on it for a period of time if need be. SSRI's like zoloft, lexapro and celexa gave me D. Effexor is an SNRI and it didn't affect me that way. Of course, everyone is different. Good luck!

I used Effexor XR 37.5 to start for 6 months and went off. Then 5 months later...had to go back on, but my doc wanted to try something else first....


I used celexa and slept for a week. Nope, not for me

Used Paxil and had the most severe headache and felt out of it for a week...nope.

I decided it's an interesting concept for the doctor to give you something for a week to make you feel worse than you did before, go off the med and even though you feel as bad as initially, you don't feel as bad as when on the med....what a relief!!! lol.

I went back on the effexor XR 37.5 and had to up it after a week. I stayed on it for almost 8 years.

For many, depression is an antidote for anxiety, but anxiety usually isn't an antidote for depression. Even though I have anxiety, therapy helped that, but it didn't help the depression much, I don't tend to show it. It hits dark and severe...but happened worse during a crisis that I had no control.

The effexor made everything much brighter and quieter.

I did gain weight, but that could've been from the 1 - 2 terry's chocolate oranges a day..lol. You know, like...take two and maybe call me in the morning??

If you have more anxiety...something like Celexa or lexapro would be good...
If you have more depression and lack energy, Effexor and ilk are good. I've never been on welbutrin, but my friend used it to get off cigarettes (zyban)...she was totally wired!

Keep us posted as to what you get...and I suggest big time, you start with a very low dosage.

I swear that Wellbutrin kicked my anxiety sky high and into a flare.
