Quick question. I am confused about the term "severity" when talking about UC. Does it mean severity of symptoms? Or length of colon affected? Or something about the way the tissue looks when examined under microscope?

when I was told I had severe inflammation after a colonoscopy in the past, only my rectum and a small portion of my colon was inflamed and the rest was fine.

Severity of symptoms. Same here, the severity of my illness was bad enough to warrant a colectomy yet the disease never really affected more than a nickel-size spot in my rectum.
