Hello, All. I am 32 and have had UC for about 17 years. I hae been in and out of flares the whole time. Flares are always intense, but I have always gotten through them, off the prednisone and just onto my maintance drug. Over the years I have been on asocol, imuran, saulfasalazine, something that started with a "m". I have been in the hopital twice for it. Once for two weeks and just this last time for three weeks. This flare started a little over a year ago and I tried to stave it off for months. Then in Aug 10, it spiraled out of control. I have been on 40 mg of pred and now they have upped e to 60 mg. I am also taking rowasa, colozal and have had two doses of remicade. Two weeks ago they did another scope, only to find the inflammation has gone down very little. I tapered my pred by 5 mg yesterday and already my symptoms have intensified. The doctors are now bringing up surgery. This scares me. So, for my questions...have any of you gotten Pyoderma with your UC? It has set with this flare and I am wondering how long it takes to clear up. Also, how long should we give the remicade to kick in? Is anyone familiar with the SCD diet? Has it worked for any of you? Thanks, all.

Sorry to hear about your situation. If you browse the rest of this forum you will see that many of us are well versed in the SCD diet. I am currently on the diet and have not found any relief but that's just me. Others have had a lot of success with it but it is a hard diet to stick to.

The time it takes for Remicade to work is also variable. See this thread:

Try not to stress about surgery. From what I have heard many have found success with it and life is actually much better after. There will probably be a few more trips to the toilet but no more accidents, no more pain, no more urgency and no more blood. Good luck!

Sure, give the SCD diet a try if you can. As Max stated, it works for some but not for others. It didn't work for me and after a relentless 2 year flare I opted for jpouch surgery. That was 10 years ago and I have never regretted parting with my colon/rectum.

While you work to gain remission it would probably be a good idea to at minimum, get a surgical consult. If you ultimately need surgery, you want to be able to choose the surgeon and it's best to do that before you get too ill. For highly recommended surgeons in your state go to www.j-pouch.org and ask for referrals. Just by having a consultation doesn't mean you have to have surgery but you will be better informed in the event you have to go that route.
