Azathioprine and breast feeding

I am a 32 year old woman with Ulcerative Colitis.  I have been in remission for almost 2 years with the help of Azathioprine- 125 mg per day, and a controlled, food combining diet.  My husband and I are planning on having children in the near future.  I have been to numerous hig risk pregnancy doctors who have encouraged me to stay on the immune supressant throughout pregnancy, but I have recieved very conflicting ideas on breastfeeding.  One says its fine, that you just have to wait 3-4 hours after taking the meds, one says its out of the question  Any feedback from anyone who has gone through this would be greatly appreciated!

I thought it contained the best information I've found. I breastfed while talking Asacol and Canasa and felt I needed to stop when taking the combination of prednisone, cyclosporine, Imuran and Lovenox. My baby was also older by that point. You will get different opinions from different doctors. I found my child's pro-breastfeeding pediatrician and La Lache League to be most helpful.

Good luck to you. Breastfeeding was a great experience (and I felt an important one for my child's health); I hope your uc doesn't get in the way of it. On the other hand, staying as healthy as you can would be the best choice you can make for your baby. It's hard to care for your baby if you're ill.

My doctor did not recommend it. I waited to start Imuran until I was no longer breastfeeding. I just had my baby in August and waited to start Imuran until November. I was not in much of a flare though. If I were I would have stopped breastfeeding and started Imuran earlier. I was never able to exclusively breastfeed though. I had low supply with both my kids and have wondered if my UC caused that...

I don't see how waiting 3-4 hours would help; it takes Imuran weeks to get out of your system.
Other than that, I don't know.

I agree with Subzeromambo - I would not be comfortable breastfeeding on Imuran.

I was told I could breastfeed on Imuran if I wanted to, but that I would be taking a risk to do so because there are no studies of the effect on the baby. In the end I've managed to stay off Imuran, although think I'll be back on it before long. I struggled having enough milk for my baby and suspect my general ill health contributed to that.
