That business with insurance companies forcing use of generics totally sucks!!!!!! I had a big flare-up of UC in 2008 after switching to generic Colazal from brandname due to insurance requirements. Then when the insurance agent saw my record listing higher medical expenses to treat the flare, he told me to get a letter from my gastro stating that I need to stay on brandname med. They resumed paying for brandname, but my gastro has to re-certify my need annually. Have you discussed your side effect on generic with doctor yet? It's worth a fight to stay on the brandname if that's really what you need. The New York Times published an article on generics vs. brandname meds ca. 14 mo. ago where doctors said that psychotropic drugs are 1 of 3 major areas where they find high rates of patients having problems with generics! (Others being cardiology & epilepsy generics!) It's really outrageous that insurers foist dangerous complications on us-- they pay lower rates for brandname than an uninsured patient, besides! After my 2009 hassle, I found out that my insurer only had to pay $11-$55/mo. for brandname Colazal-- whereas it cost $642.50/mo. then for an uninsured patient in the state where I live.
