Interesting, I asked my GI about switching from Asacol to some other type of mesalamine before trying AZA and simply said "you can try it if you want but it won't work" lol.
The logic of this article seems to make sense however keep in mind it is funded by the same company that makes the drug that the article is recommending...

Seems like a sensible idea to me, try different formulations of mesalamine-type meds before escalating to stronger and more side-effect laden drugs.

What I don't like is their example of one or two people to illustrate improvement. You can find one or two people to make a case for any protocol under the sun. Show some studies with a hundred patients to make the point.

I totally agree with the limited cases shown.

As well..none are on rectal meds (wouldn't be me if I didn't say that).

Many of us suggest switching 5ASA meds, and there has been a change in symptoms. For some it wasn't an improvement, for others it was.

I like the idea of trying different 5ASAs. I did try Lialda and Colozal when Asacol stopped keeping me in remission. I wanted to try more 5ASAs but because of timing I had to get the flare under control. Each 5ASA I tried, I had to give a few weeks to work, I wasn't improving from any of the 5ASAs I had tried. I would have really liked to try Pentasa or sulphasalazine but if they didn't work, it would have pushed me back another month or 2 on 6mp and I would have had to be on steroids even longer. In the end, I wish instead of Lialda, I had tried a different 5ASA (lialda is too similar to Asacol but my doctor thought it was worth a try bc she has patients who do better on it) and I wish I was faster to start 6mp because that took a while to take effect. I still wonder if there is a 5ASA out there that would have helped me so I didn't need to be on 6mp but it's too late now.
