What is the significance of filing a patent?

Dr. Borody filed a patent for MAP treatment in IBD. I've been reading a lot of research lately on MAP, which I thought it was a dead end subject.

So that YOU are the "original" and sole owner of that idea and get the profits or recognition if there are any to be had..etc.

Some I've heard have a time limit on them....?
