Hiya I have depression aswell as ulcerative colitis and was wondering if anyone else has? 

I have struggled a lot with flares this year and this is making the depression worse.  I am trying to stay at work full time but struggle mentally as well as with feeling physically ill.  Today my boss mentioned going part time, I know it would be easier but I need the money.

I went on the depression forums on here to see if anyone is having problems with working but they all seemed to be so much iller than me I felt like I would be wasting their time with a trivial thing like being unable to face work.

Sometimes I am so tired and fed up all I want is to sleep all day and night.  I had a week off recently, that is all I did but I felt as if I needed it just as much afterwards.

Hi. I am using Cipralex (active ingredient - Escitalopramum) to treat depression, with good results.

Hiya thanks for the advice but I am already on Fluoxetine for the depression.  Since I was hospitalised due to UC in august 2010 I don't think it has worked as well as before though.

I think the tiredness that UC brings on can make you feel depressed. Obviously this isn't the same as being diagnosed with depression but there must be a thin line between both.

Sometimes it feels as if there is never going to be an end to the symptoms which also adds to the feelings - when I'm in a flare I want to do things but just can't be bothered because I feel tired.

My remedy is to have a plan, however small. That way I feel like I'm doing something e.g. if I change my diet slightly over a couple of weeks, it feels like I am working towards a goal.

The other thing that I struggle with but am getting better at is accepting that it's alright to lay on the sofa all day to help the colon relax - I would normally feel like I should be doing something. But sometimes it's good to do nothing so that the body isn't working too hard.
