SCD

I'm going to try the specific carbohydrate diet because it probably can't hurt at this point

I saw the GI in Rochester again today and we are upping the Humira to every week. I thought it was doing some good but I was just having a good week, I guess, because it hasn't been helping anymore. If that doesn't work, he said it would be Cimzia next. I am concerned less about the symptoms (since I've been dealing with them for 3.5 years now and oh well, whatever) and more about the damage that is being caused to my small intestine by chronic inflammation and what will happen if we can never get it under control. I don't have a colon so I can't keep losing parts of my digestive system

Best of luck starting SCD. It is a healthy way to eat even for non-UC reasons. My spouse thinks it's been very healthy for him and I know how it's improved my life incredibly.

It is not an overnight miracle and not a straight line of daily improvement (at least not for me) but when I just looked back a year at meds and OTC I was taking daily it's a huge difference.

My suggestion is not to treat SCD as the Bible in regards to eating all the foods. If you notice a food not agreeing with you even if it is "legal" then remove it. I think this is why SCD didn't work for me the first time. I followed the rules and didn't get better. The 2nd try I listened to my gut and found success.

My second suggestion: Don't think that you will never be able to have illegal foods ever again. As my colon healed I am able to have foods that caused problems a year ago. No I can't have them every day or in large quantities but I don't have a relapse just a little discomfort.

Pam, I've been following your story and think you are very brave as well as generous to share your experience.
I hope SCD can provide some measure of relief for you. I feel like both a scientist and detective after this past 14.5 months of getting my gut into a happier condition. SCD is not easy but you've been through worse. At least your diet and SCD is something you have control over.
