I have not had that problem with VSL#3 but perhaps it is such a strong probiotic that it can cause problems if you are not used to it. I like mixing it with soluble fiber like psyllium and kefir, with blueberries or apple sauce. Soluble psyllium fiber does not encourage diarrhea.
Another possibility might be the Ensure. Several of its ingredients listed here like carrageenan, corn syrup, etc. would definitely give me gastro symptoms
