OT - Husband has Celiac Disease!

Well, after a long four months of my husband being ill and losing over 30 pounds, we finally have an answer!  Found out on April 11 that he has Celiac Disease.  We instantly went gluten free and he is feeling so much better and the diarrhea is GONE!  It took all four months of me pushing his doctor, numerous trips to the ER, and then finally a trip to a surgeon out of town to get the answer.  The surgeon even tried to turn us away because it "isn't life threatening" (his exact words).  I refused to take no for an answer and told the surgeon that we were not leaving the hospital until he had a scope.  LOL. I am sure that doctor never wants to see me again in his life as the "cranky wife" came out in me.  He did have some "colitis" and was put on Asacol but it wasn't helping.  It took a few weeks to get the results from the biopsies and it is a definitive diagnosis so he stopped the Asacol right away (it probably has gluten in it, too).  Now that he is gluten free, the colitis will clear up and the damage to his intestines will heal.  I have decided that I will also go gluten free to simplify life and to reduce the risk of cross contamination. I figure it won't hurt me and in the long run, it may help me feel better and shed some of this prednisone weight that I have been carrying around. 

Now begins the  learning how to shop, cook and eat gluten free.  I have a pretty good handle on it so far but my hurdle is now finding the products.  I live in a very small rural town in BC and products are limited and very pricey.  I realize that I will pay more for gluten free products but it is really high here.  I have found a few online resources for ordering but the shipping is as much, if not more, than the products.  Hopefully I will be able to find a good supply store in a nearby town (the closest one being 1.5 hours away).  Guess I will have to become a domestic diva too and start baking again.  LOL. 

Well enough from me.  Just thought I would share what has been going on in my life lately.  Hope everyone is doing well.

ElephantPipe~I was told by a Nurse Practioner that many "cranky wives" have saved their husbands' lives. Because I work in a hospital here in BC, I know how the system works. Too many patients are turned away when they shouldn't be. And yes, he was happy that I got pushy because there is no way he would have.

Beth75~No Trader Joe's here. My options are Overwaitea, two small convenience stores (no gluten free products) and one small Health Food store. So far I have found enough gluten free products to get us through and I am finding more and more recipes for breads, etc that don't have a long list of ingredients.

Songlady~you are so right. More and more restaurants and stores are becoming more aware of allergies and are willing to provide service and products to those who require them.

We are doing well with the changes, although he is pretty down about not getting hot cross buns at Easter.
