I have proctitis and have been using the cortenemas. I'm still having rectal pain and I can swear I know exactly where my rectum is inflamed inside. Sometimes initially inserting the enema hurts. So, I started putting some vaseline on the tip of it as I find there's such a cheap amt of lube that comes on the tip.

Is Vaseline safe to use or can it cause irritation? Should I be using something like K-Y?

Just make sure you clean the extra vaseline/lube off your anal area as if not it can trap in moisture and cause yeast. I use prep H ointment to insert my canasa as it has a nice soothing effect on my hemmies as an added bonus. Another trick is when you withdraw the enema squeeze it on the way out so some gets around your tender spot, just make sure there's a towel under you.

KY would be better as it's easier to clean off the skin than Vaseline.

I agree that something like KY is better to use as a lube. However, on occasion I have used vaseline, prep H, cortisone cream - whatever I've had available, on the belief that a little less-than-great lube is better than possibly tearing the tissue when inserting it.

I was thinking of trying Vit E oil. I wouldn't think it would be harmful. I remember when I had my first child, they opened up some Vit E and poured it on me before my son came out. I was concerned about the Vaseline because I wondered if it could possibly be irritating since its petroleum based.
