GI doctor recommendations in DC area

Hi everyone,

After having some concerns for a while about my current doctor, I have decided that I am going to pursue a second opinion which will hopefully lead to me transitioning over to someone I'm more comfortable with. There are two main issues that I have with my current doctor: 1) General lack of bedside manner--he focuses greatly on the negatives and usually gets me completely anxiety-ridden when we have to change course (which has happened a few times as my colon is proving to be a pain in the ass, haha). I need a doctor who can be realistic, yet encouraging and doesn't make me leave his office crying because I'm so scared. 2) My current doctor is pretty set in his ways and is not as open minded to trying alternate strategies as I would like him to be.

Any recommendations would be helpful. I found some information on the digestive disease group at Johns Hopkins that looked interesting...it would be about an hour drive for me, but if they are as good as they look, it might be worth the travel.

I liked Dr Martin Prosky in Annandale VA. Personable, easy to talk to, cares about you as a patient, funny, great bedside manners. I wasn't of the alternative treatment mindset when I lived in VA so I can't speak to that, but my hunch is he's not a fan. Really liked his nurses, they were always helpful.

strongly would not recommend Dr. Morton, also in Annandale VA. very poor bedside manners

may be worth calling CCFA for an alternate medicine recommendation, like a naturopath or TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine Dr)

Thanks for the suggestions so far! One of the things that I liked about Johns Hopkins is that it seems as though they have a program where they combine standard treatments with alternative approaches such as acupuncture and mind-body therapy. I haven't discussed those sorts of approaches with my doctor because I have the feeling he would immediately discount them because he's pretty traditional and tends to poo-poo (pun not intended) approaches that are outside the box.

Beachlife, thanks for the recommendation and non-recommendation, which is just as useful (if not more)! I'm actually going to be doing some volunteer work soon for the DC CCFA chapter, so I'm hoping that I might be able to chat with some people and get more information on local alternative resources.

Peety, it looks like Dr. Ginsberg is still with GWU, but he's a professor emeritus, so I'm not sure if he's still practicing or just teaching.
