Running out of Meds.

I have been in remission now for around a year. (YAY)

I am on 150mg of Mercaptopurine and 3000mg Olsalazine a day.

The problem i am having is with how my GP surgery works.

I am given a 4 week supply of these meds and i am only allowed to put in a repeat prescription a week before i run out.

I do so like clockwork but the surgery keeps messing things up and when i go to the supermarket (they send my prescription there to be filled) there will not be anything for me to pick up, this causes me to have to run around like a headless chicken trying to get the GP to sort a prescription. I usually end up having to wait a day or so for the problem to be resolved.

Today i have the same problem (Saturday) the GP surgery wont be open until Monday and i only have enough meds to last until that day.

My worry is i will run out before getting the problem sorted out one.

I am wondering if anyone knows what will happen if i don't have my meds for 2-3 days because of this. ALSO does anyone have any suggestions to how i can try and prevent this from happening.

That is not a convenient situation at all. Why can't he write the script for a full year. my GI always does 3 months - a year. She knows I am going to need the meds all year. I would see a new doctor or explain to your current GP that this isn't working for you. I would be very stressed out if I had that situation every month. Can you let the pharmacy handle calling the doctor and getting things in order?

Hi thanks for the reply. The pharmacy said they cannot do anything like that. I have asked for larger prescriptions but i just get told they cannot. I am however going to persist on the matter by talking to the practice manager and my GI at the hospital.

I am just worried more about what effects it could have on my condition, the thought of not having the meds that are keeping me well fills me dread, as i do not know if missing a day or so will launch me straight back into the hell i was in before.

If you miss a day or two of mercaptopurine, I don't think it would change your condition too much. The medication stays in your system for a quite a while. In fact, some people only take a dose every other day. I do not like to miss my Asacol dose because in the past, I have had symptoms arise from missing it. That was before I was on 6mp. I am not sure if Asacol does anything for me anymore but I am scared to stop. I am going to try to reduce the dose slowly.

I know the pharmacy can't fill more than the prescription but can they call your doctor on the day it needs to be filled and get it refilled without you having to do all the leg work? If I have a script on autofill, the pharmacy calls my doctor for me.

Ahh thank you.. its good to know at least It won't have a massive effect.

I will just have to badger someone into a less problematic system for me.
