I have had proctitis since the mid 90s. The worst episodes during the early 2000s. Usually every 18 months lasting for 3 months on meds and always wiped out with the silver bullet prednisone. Always diarrhea, blood etc. My mother had the same except worse because then there weren't the meds.
My current episode is mainly constipation still with some blood and wind. Drives me nuts getting up at night just to sit and expect a stool but just fart with no feces but a spray of blood and mucus. Meanwhile at 2AM the rest of the household sleep and snore.
Both Benefiber and metamucil are helping stools to soften. Also take Pentasa enemas at night, colifoam in the morning and 9 of the Pentasa tablets that I have been taking daily since 2000. I was told never ever to stop the tablets.
I initially blamed worsening constipation on the Norvasc tablets I had been newly prescribed. Pharmacist agreed however now I realise it was just the usual arriving in different clothing.
I am getting on top of it however I am finding I am suffering from very low sodium levels. 110..I presume the extra feces are part of the cause of that. Makes me ache in the joints, light headed and eye problems.
Colitis is unfortunately only #2 on my list of genetic diseases as I (and my daughter) also suffer from the results of pheochromocytoma a rare genetic adrenal cancer. I am always on a large regime of medications without the extra colitis meds..
As I am now on steroid replacements now my adrenals have gone I can no longer take prednisone as it pushes my BP into the 200s so I hope the enemas etc do the job.
I guess the question I really want to ask is could the fiber supplements hinder sodium absorbtion and make the sodium electrolite thing worse.?
