low blood count, then chest infection now on the antibiotics

hi as some of u know my white cells were low,due to imuran,so all last week i was so so weak now this week i have a bad chest infection so had to take antibiotics, now i know they can gave you D, so im on a sweat and just hope it doesnt,my GI phoned me and said that if my blood come back next week ok then start the imuran again at 50mg, as for now i have no uc symptoms well i have had 2 bms the last 2 days tho they were norm, so i just pray i can get back on the imuran soon and the antibiotics do no harm. any tips are welcome.lol..thanks

Hi pauly...just what you DON'T need!!! sheesh. I hope your infection improves soon. What antibiotics are you on and for how long?

Maybe all will be OK after that.

pauly, what terrible luck! I had the same situation but I was lucky enough to stay healthy throughout having the low counts. My GI kept telling me if I had a cold/flu that I would have to go to the hospital but fortunately I didn't get any illnesses. I am so sorry you're dealing with a chest infection and antibiotics and worst of all, stress about UC. Try to think positive, things will improve.

Definitely keep the positive thoughts up, but you should take some kind of probiotic to introduce some good flora into your gut as antibiotics wipe all that out, which can give you some D. When I was on Imuran, I had problems with low white blood cell counts, to the point I was taken off it and later sent to a hematologist to check for lymphoma or something, but that's another story. I didn't get sick too much then, but when I was on Entocort earlier this year, I had two sinus infections while on it, and the antibiotics did not react well to my still kind of in a flare UC. It was not fun at all. Hopefully you stay healthy!

Sorry to hear about this.  Hopefully this is just a blip on the radar.  Counts will usually bounce back quicly once off, then a more conservative introduction of the med often will suffice.  I have never had this.  Once my blood counts got into the normal range (it was very high) it has stayed there.  Thats almost 3 years.  I am having a flex sigmoid in about three weeks, if the rectum looks good then I am lowering my Imuran from 150 mg to 100.  I weigh about 170 lbs. 

Someone earlier gave you good advice.  Use some good probiotics during this time.  Keep that gut colonized.  I live PB8 or Vsl.
