Annyong haseyo, Korean friends.I would be interested to know something about your general pre illness diet.
Did you happen to eat bread, cookies, fried, baked, grilled, barbecued, broiled meats and fish to any great extent.
Drink coffee,or eat chocolate.
I am trying to see if there is a link between western cooking methods/food and UC.
Most interested in the cooking method.
Kamsahamnida.
I spent all of 1971 on and off the DMZ and in Uijeongbu.

Hi Mike,
While I was growing up and living at home, my parents cooked most nights of the week so we had a typical Korean diet, which consisted of:
White Rice
Soup (beef or fish broth + vegetables and tofu and occasionally meat)
Side dishes made of pickled vegetables, cooked potato, various greens
A main protein like pan fried fish, or grilled beef or chicken
We'd also dine in a typical American fashion a few times a month and have hamburgers or pizza or meatloaf or roast beef.
We used to drink a beverage called "boreecha" which was a hot or cold tea brewed from roasted corn or roasted barley. Eventually we acquired a Sparkletts water cooler and switched over to water.
I didn't consume much coffee during my years living at home, but I did eat sweets like any other kid growing up in the U.S. I also was a soda fiend and could easily finish off a 24 pack of Pepsi in a weekend. Once I got my license and car and started being more independent, I used to LOVE eating fast food since it was so much more flavorful (and unhealthy) than home made Korean food.
My UC diagnosis occurred after I finished undergraduate and was a few years into the working life. My parents to this day still blame the UC on me leaving home and no longer eating my mom's home cooking.
Who knows...maybe they are right, but Western medicine says the two events are unrelated.
So to summarize, from birth to about
age 16 I was eating whatever mom made, which was usually Korean food. After 16 I started eating more on my own, which was a mix of Korean food at home and then fast food burgers and pizza a few nights a week. In college my diet was almost entirely American.
