Rectal itching?

Ok so I've been off the Rowasa enemas for over a week now. But all of a sudden I'm experiencing really bad rectal itching. I can feel a slight hemorrhoid on the outside but the itching is for the most part on the beginning of the inside of the rectum. I'm not having any other symptoms. Can this be from stopping the enema, from a hemorrhoid or the start of another flare? Should I call my GI doctor? What over the counter product should I take? Keep in mind, the itching is on the inside, right at the beginning of the rectum. Not sure if any OTC creams will work. Is it okay to put something like preparation H slightly on the inside? The itching is so bad. Feels like a hive or mosquito bite it itches so much.

chrissy, I often get itching when I have a hemorrhoid that is going away. I think I had the itching when my fissure went away too. For me, it can be a sign of healing, which is always good, but it's awful when you're uncomfortable. I think hydrocortisone cream could be helpful or you could try prep H or tucks. I never find those to be too helpful. Actually, nothing is all that helpful for that sort of thing in my opinion. Calmoseptine is sometimes soothing but it isn't a cure.

Thanks! I'll try the hydrocortisone cream first. I guess ever since I got diagnosed, I'm worried and paranoid about any and all symptoms.

Why are you off the Rowasa completely?

I'd try the steroid cream initially. Take a look-see by squatting over a mirror. You might have a fissure.

You can get mild hydrocortisone creams which are very good for this. I have used Canesten HC and Anusol HC in the past and they are very effective.

I had the same thing. My GI told me it was a fungal infection and prescribed Clotrimazole-Betamethasone cream. It took care of the problem very quickly.

If you don't want to bother your Dr, the active ingredient of the medicine for athlete's foot is Clotrimazole. You could try that before getting the prescription.

You should really get it checked out by your doc, especially if this is a new symptom for you. Like tlhall says, she ended up having a fungal infection so you should get it checked out so you know for sure what is causing the itching.

Just another possibility to toss out there, I recently had a stool test which indicated the presence of pinworms, of all things.  (highly contageous, causes intense rectal itching, and also might explain why my kids had itchy bottoms...)  Anyway, it was really easy to treat with over the counter medication.  Just another potential cause of itchy bottom.

I had pinworms once when I was a kid, but never got it treated....I've wondered for many yrs what really happens inside you if you don't get it treated, infact I thought it might have been the reason I ended up getting sick with IBD.

Not according to the hygiene theory...you should have NOT gotten it if it's true.
