Imuran taper?

I see my GI in a few weeks and we'll discuss how remi is doing for me.  I am also on imuran and have been since Oct.  I have been on it a few times before and don't think it's worked for me, hence the remi.

Should I taper off of it or should I just stop it. I think my GI has just stopped me off of it before but, when I did that with the sulfasalazine, that was my 4 month flare up. 

I had high liver counts my last two tests (before the remi) my last one had been better but still not good.  I just did one last week so should know soon what that says.

I just stopped it. No clue what the protocol is for that. If it was up to the GI he would have kept me on it, although it did NOTHING in the year I was on it.

Thanks Dr. A! I don't feel it has ever helped me and I forgot to bring it with me and I missed a dose, but I felt better the next day (general health wise not taking it).

I want off of it and will talk w/my GI, he listens to me very well.

you don't need to taper Imuran, stopping cold turkey is fine. Did your GI tell you to stop? Or are you just quitting before you see him? I've been on it a long time now myself, not sure if I want to stop or not. I think it did help, at one point, but.... not sure if it's doing anything at all anymore.

I think some people stay on imuran or 6mp during treatment with Remicade to pervent antibodies being built up to the medication. I know it stinks, I was hoping if I went on Remicade I could get off 6mp. 6mp has caused me a lot of problems with my blood counts dropping too low.

nope, not going off w/out talking to him first. I think he only wanted me on it for the first few months w/remi anyway.

I think I felt much more awake and "with it" when I was off of it before.

It usually takes about 3 months for it to kick in, so I suspect it will stay in your system for a while after stopping cold turkey. This is probably why you shouldn't have to taper off of it.

I'm trying to get off imuran also, and my doc wants me to taper to prevent a nasty flare. You can stop cold turkey, as long as you have other medication to prevent symptoms from coming back.
