Just wanted to make sure you are aware that if you are on a regular daily dose of Apriso for maintenance that you should be getting kidney function bloodwork regularly.   I was not and ended up in the hospital with levels 3 times that they should be, acute medicinal kidney failure.   I was dehydrated and given many IV fluids, predinisone and B12.   I have come home now and back on Prednisone which doesnt bother me too much, but with kidney function you have no symptoms, it was just a regular checkup with my medical Dr.  

So be careful and be aware, get your levels checked at least every 3 months as my kidney Dr says he sees this all the time.

Sometimes the signature doesn't show up if you don't click the box beneath your post that says "include signature". I notice it stays checked in the quick reply but not in new posts sometimes.

I am sorry to hear you're having so many problems with Apriso Belley. I wonder if it would have happened if you were on a different 5ASA? I've heard they are all rough on the kidneys. I should really get mine checked, I haven't in a while. I hope you do well without Apriso.

Sorry that happened to you, but good thing you posted about it. I've seen here in some signatures that UCers are being Rxed for double doses (i.e., 8 caps daily) of Apriso-- so all should be aware of the need for complete urinalysis at least twice annually while on 5-ASA meds longterm. BTW, I cannot take Apriso being hypersensitive to a secondary ingredient in it. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Sorry that you had to go through all of this. My Doctor doesn't say anything about getting blood work done but I insist on it. I think alot of Dr's are lax about doing this....your story is a good reminder for everyone to make sure they get there blood tested, even if they have to insist themselves.

I'm sorry you had this trouble. As others have pointed out, it's really something that should be done with all 5-ASA's, not just Apriso.

Thanks,  being new to UC I really didnt do my research.  Everything I have learned I learned here... thanks to you ladies and gents. 

Tomorrow I have my follow up with the kidney specialist.  I have my fingers crossed for good news and because I am on prednisone right now for the kidney issue my UC is great!   There are silver linings afterall.

I will update after my appt.   Remember.... we are in control of our own health I have learned to be pro-active!

Hi BelleyAche--

Did you have any symptoms of kidney failure? I'm currently at 8 pills/day and have not had my levels checked. I've been feeling terrible lately and am just trying to cover my bases. I'm going to get in touch with my PCP to get some bloodwork done, but in the mean time just wondering if you had any signs. Thanks!

No symptoms.  I went to my reg PC Physician for regular cholesterol, thyroid screening and the creatnine levels showed up in my bloodwork.  It was 3.20 and normal is below 1.0   I spent 3 days in the hospital on steroids and flushing out my kidneys.  Yes, it was the Apriso.  I had a reaction to it that they say is rare... but now I have to stay away from all the mesaline drugs.   My GI never once came or called to the hospital and havent heard them from at all.  I have now started wth a new GI.

I would suggest just getting a full metabolic panel or blood chemistry to make sure you are fine..

Thanks! I just went back into my online records and found that my GI did test some kidney function (thank goodness for technology). On 8/1 my bloodwork showed my creatine levels were normal, and I can't imagine they would change very quickly. But I will still check in with my PCP and GI! Thanks, again.

It only took 8 months for mine to go from normal at 0.40 to 3.20 which is 20% acute kidney failure. I went to my Nephrologist yesterday. My urine is completely clean now after a month on prednisone and I am awaiting creatnine results... hopefully back in normal ranges. They say this is rare reaction but it does happen so just be pro-active in your own health. :)

Pardon me if I missed something, I am not very clear which of your numbers were 3X the regular levels. Could you please let us know? Are you taking Azathioprine along with it? My former team of GIs never did my blood work when I was on Mesalamine but as soon as they switched me to Azathioprine, they were very regular with blood work and I did see my blood work, especially liver function tests, were erratic sometimes nothing through roof though.

One point I would like to make about B12. I have been prescribed 1000mcg of B12 daily but I noted on this BB that hardly anyone takes so much, even some complained that their B12 levels were out of sync.
