Colitis and treatments

I was diagnosed with UC in November 2010, and I have noticed some weight gain. I started out on Asacol and Prednisone. I was weaned off the Prednisone and then later switched from Asacol to Liada, and it didn't work for me. My BM's increased from 2-3 times a day on Asacol to 10-12 times a day on Lialda. All of my other symptoms had come back as well. I was in a lot of pain again. I got a new doctor and got switched back to Asacol and within 3 days, my symptoms got much better. This doctor said that I need more treatment then just Asacol to get my UC in remission. He was suggesting biologics, but I am concerned about the side effects. Can anyone offer some insight as to which treatments have seemed to work the best with the least amount of complications and side effects?

Well, Asacol has less complications than a lot of the others. If it seems to be working, why would you jump to biologics? Clearly you want to gain remission with the least amount of complications. I wouldn't jump to remicade or humira without trying rectal meds, asacol, prednisone, and 6mp / imuran first.

I think I would add rectal mesalamine and see if you are able to get more stable with that + Asacol.

Asacol to biologics...seems a few steps missing.

Get on rectal mesalamine enemas..yes, it's a commitment to use them, but once you learn..it's no biggie.

Welcome to the forum Lisa.

I don't understand why your doc hasn't recommended your adding rectal meds? They're quite effective and certainly carry much lesser side effects than the biologics.

Don't let the doc railroad you into something you're not ready for.

IMO, I would suggest you request your docs to give you rectal meds and try to add those.
