Although I have posted positively on surgery, a young friend in a flare after failing Remicade seems to have responded very well to stem cell therapy by Dr. Hellenthal. His practice is in Nicaragua, and combines stem cell, with strict diet, and beach resort relaxation.

On the good side the cost is cheaper than the deductible of any major treatment in the US, and one has little to lose I guess. I am always weary of people selling hope, but so far it has worked for him.

I will definitely follow his progress out of curiosity, but just wanted to share in case somebody knows about this, or wants to explore it.

I am not recommending and have no direct experience, and the pitch sounds too good to be true, but I am curious, and I know that in the US things may take longer to be available.

The website looked OK, and I am very interested in anything to do with stem cell treatments. I would be willing to fall for anything if it offered stem cell treatment.  I sure hope the website was written by a person for whom English is their second language. Also, they misspelled Crohn's disease on their website (badly-Chrone's) and that is always a big negative for me. As least spell the disease you claim you can cure correctly.

Yes Levi the doctor is Austrian and the personnel is spanish speaking, so I do not ding them for bad spelling. I have spent weeks in different California Hospitals with my son and the care givers are not always native English speakers either. Our friend is back home and doing well, the question is how long to follow his recovery before considering it a success. Is stem cell treatment meant to buy you some time by promoting tissue healing and then back to square one, or would this give you longer term remission?

I'm not really sure. I know the stem cell treatment in which they basically destroy your immune system is supposedly a cure for the people that it indeed works for. For stem cell drugs that are injections every so often for a certain period of time--I don't know if the tests have been going on long enough to see exactly how it will work. There is a drug like the latter that seems very promising to me and is called Prochymal. There is another one for UC and I think it is called Multistem. I hope it's approved withing five-six years.

And yeah, if they are Austrians and Latinos that would make me feel better about the website!

I would love to have more info about what procedures your friend went through. How bad were his symptoms? Keep us updated!

I am very interested in the procedure but I don't think I would go to another country to try something experimental. Maybe if I were dying I would give it a go but not whent here are treatments available here. I have heard stem cell treatment can be quite risky.

Levi, I spoke to the mother of the patient yesterday. He continues to do well. In this treatment they do not destroy the immune system. It seems to be a bunch of antibiotics, folic acid, stem cell injections, diet, and the low stress resort phase. The stem cell injections are belly-button self administered pen type done over three months. Not sure about the other factors.
Our friend is college aged, dealing with UC for about 4 years, got really bad last year, post Remicade, both colon and joint issues, was trying Humira but stopped now.

Nososicklygirl, I hear you. If things get really bad you may also have to change your screen name...

I will follow his progress and try to learn. Somehow if stem cells work well we will start hearing about them from many quarters.
To be candid I poked my nose into his case out of conviction that stem would not work. Just wanted to be there and coach him on surgery if time came.

I searched for Curismo Medical Center on Google and got a link to the above pdf. This is the docter at the center, the one from the title of this topic. It is very long and I haven't read much yet, but there is a section on UC and CD. The bit I did read was very interesting and think anyone interested in stem cell or antibiotic treatment should have a look.

When discussing the wisdom of long term immunosuppresant vs. antibiotic treatment, he gets pretty snarky at the belief that immunosuppresants should be used. Should be interesting to read the whole thing.
