HELP!! Need Advice!!! Proctitis/UC Pregnant and mucus in stools!!

Long story short I was diagnosed with proctitis but my biopsies came back as UC in Feb but my official diagnosis is "proctitis" after a colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy to follow up a few months later... since then I have been taken Asacol HD 800mg TID. I am just now going on 13 weeks pregnant. I have not noticed any symptoms and have been well controlled on the Asacol since. When I was "flaring" prior to the colonoscopy my symptoms were not typical and I just had the urgency with the mucus with my stools and this horrible almost like ammonia smelling stools (this is when I came out of denial and realized...yeah Kahlee something is not right). I would also be working and get this horrible gassy feeling and have to sprint to the bathroom and just have drops of mucus. Only on 2 occasions did I have a streak of blood on a normal looking stool and this happened months apart.

More presently with my pregnancy like I said, I had no symptoms. Probably last week I noticed just being a little tender to my left lower quad (Which I am used to) and some mild rectal pain.. more crampy feeling but not bad at all.. then I started to have some mucus intertwined within my normal looking stools. I mentioned at my OB appt that I had this and she seemed to shrug it off at that point since it was a very small amt and I didnt appear constipated, no blood etc. Since then I have been still having normal stools daily and have noticed mucus at the ends of my stools that is clear about a nickle size amount. I have NEVER had the issues with bloody diarrhea or diarrhea period. Wanting to know if anyone is as weird in the UC department as me and has similair experiences in your pregnancy?? I just really am trying not to stress cuz I know I need to remain happy and positive for my baby (we tried for 2 years prior) Please respond quick!!

I think that you should be using rectal meds. The oral mesalamine doesn't reach the end of the colon and rectum all that well, and rectal meds really do. I'd call your GI and ask about mesalamine enemas (Rowasa is the brand name) or suppositories (Canasa). I would, however, stay on the Asacol as well, just to make sure the upper portion of your colon is kept in control, too. During pregnancy and after delivery are two "prime" times for flares to occur, since hormones are going nutso.

I agree completely about the rectal meds, and staying on your oral meds. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

     I suffered with UP for twelve years prior to my surgery.  My GI doctor had me on Colazal.  He said the Asacol didn't reach the rectum.  He most likely was correct, because, if anything, the Colazal did keep the ulcerations confined to the rectum.  At the time of my surgery, last year, my colon was not bad at all but my rectum was still a mess.

     I was 63 at time of surgery, so no pregnancy issues.  However, I doubt it is a good idea to use rectal meds while pregnant.  Only my personal thought but better to check with your OB/GYN.  The best of luck to you.  God bless.
