Since yesterday I have a runny nose & periodic sneezing fits. Ragweed must be high from bountiful rain during August. Any fellow sufferers around here? If so, do you take anything otc for relief? / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

From Ontario but I've noticed my allergies going a bit haywire lately.

I take an extra strength daily antihistamine pill, and if it gets bad I'll take a liquid pill that will kick in quicker. But I find the liquid form makes me dopey, like I'm stoned. I may just be too sensitive to it though. I've tried the natural stuff, but it's never helped at all.

I'm in the south and noticed my allergies acting up a few days ago. Zyrtec is no longer effective for me, so I have to use Singulair...just called in the refill!

I'm in Tennessee. We had an absolutely miserable spring allergy season, now they say this fall season will be even worse. My nose has been stuffed up and my throat sore off and on for a couple of weeks now. I use Zyrtec and saline nasal spray, but still not having a lot of fun so far. I'm also on Advair twice a day, which does keep the asthma at bay.

my allergies have been kicking my butt the past few days- I'm in New England, & it just got cold here about 3-4 days ago, in the 40's at night, mid 60's during the day. And ever since the change in temp, I wake up with my sinuses totally clogged up, my head pounding, my throat aching. I use saline nasal spray year-round, like a fiend- I find when I use it in the AM, things soften up & drain out of my sinuses. Which means I'm sneezing & blowing my nose for about 3 hours each morning. On really bad days I take an OTC allergy & sinus med, it dries up my nose & eases the headaches. But sometimes it's too drying, & just makes my sinuses hurt. I also think it could be small cold, as I've been TIRED & spacey the past few days too. Ugh.... come on winter, kill all the pollen & spores!

I'm in New England too and my allergies have been horrible. Burning, dry itchy eyes and scratchy throat. All I'm using is Clear Eyes allergy relief.

Thanks, everybody! Eva, that's the same situation here-- temp dropped seriously a couple days ago & I started in with respiratory symptoms. Also, put on my hoodie, feel too hot; take off hoodie, feel chilly. An absolute drageroo & I'm trying to remember how last Sept. went, whether there's a pattern to this. I do recall feeling totally beat by mid-Nov. last yr-- so that my gastro ran all kinds of blood tests, which turned out o.k. Then when the true winter cold hit over Christmas weekend, I immediately pepped up. So I think you're absolutely right that it kills off pollen or airborne spores that bother us. (sigh) Why do we have such crazy immune reactions? (Just venting ... ) / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

You're not alone Old Hat. We have all been miserable here in MI too. Our house sounds like a sick house when we get up in the morning - snuffling and chuffing. We have a high weed count as of late which is not helping our allergies at all. We also have the same temp drop...it's been crazy!

There was a front page article in our newspaper today about how Hurricane Irene caused very high mold levels.... and various other levels are way up, too.

A lot of us are feeling the effects, I believe! Hubby thinks he has a cold, but he was outdoors all weekend.... I'm thinking it's allergies.

The way I can tell allergies from a cold is that the lymph glands below my earlobes become sore if it's a cold. I guess we're in for a spell of weather-related irritation because today's forecast says temp will rise again here to 80 degrees by Friday.
