It's interesting, but the infection was introduced to the mice by a gastro wash, directly into the induced damaged intestine.

I can see that chronic sinusitis can cause distress on the immune system causing intrinsic reactions (such as asthma), that's not to say that UC can't result from that.

Since UC has a SPECIFIC pattern of starting at the rectal/anal junction, I can't see that as being a cause since stool doesn't usually sit there as it would in the sigmoid.

Still an interesting and important study I think. Many people suffer from chronic sinusitis, but chronic sinus infection would be different, wouldn't it, and could continue long after the infection is gone since that in itself can be autoimmune?

I had multiple sinus infections prior to getting Uc, but I don't believe that is what caused mine. But rather the antibiotics used to treat the sinus infections was my trigger.

I have had several sinus infections in the last year and the ear, nose, throat doc I see said its probably because my sinuses are just messed up, deviated septum and small nasal passages, and because my immune system has been so suppressed by the UC meds that I can't fight these infections off well. He never mentioned it being autoimmune. I certainly think its possible that since UC is an autoimmune disorder, our immune systems are just so out of whack--either working too hard or not enough, that we are predisposed to getting infections.

And, ooh, yes, all the antibiotics for the sinus infections did not help my UC out at all..but it did not cause it.

well, i do have chronic sinus infection and i do tested positive with staphylococcus aureus that seemed to cause this infection.

the model can explain some inflammation in our colon mucosa, who knows, but if we look at the date of the study - 2005, and search for follow ups, there's nothing there...

Thanks for posting this. It is absolutely the case with me. I have had rhinitis and nasal drip for a long time. In fact my January 2-hour MRI/MRV noted this while everything else was normal.

I had one horrible bout of rhinitis that prevented me from working and I badgered the doctor until I had gone thru 3 rounds of antibiotics and then had full blown UC.

I have been suffering from sinusitis since I was a little boy and I have been suffering from UC for the last 17 years. Earlier this year, I did the combo antibiotic therapy for UC which put me in full remission.

The combo antibiotic therapy also 'cured' my sinusitis and I started wondering if there is a link between sinusitis and UC and I did some research on the internet and stumbled on this study.

I've had quit a few sinus infections. I took antibiotics for six months for a really bad sinus infection I had when I was 22. I had been in the hospital for pneumonia and insisted on leaving before I was totally better because I had already missed two weeks of the spring semester. Anyway, the infection was so bad that the snot was yellow, thick, and rubbery just like a yellow rubber band. I never forget that.

However, I didn't notice any correlation between my sinus infections and my IBD. It's the antibiotics that completely messed up my colon, and that was a very slow process--years of abuse.

I've always had issues with allergies, but they become much worst post-UC. I also had never had a sinus infection until after UC.

it seems to point to one more way that the adaptive immune system in the colon can get out of wack and lead to UC. Not necessarily in all cases, nor would UC cause sinus infections. Also, the antibiotics for the sinus may be an additional way that the immune system in the colon get out of wack.

I think the story is complicated.
