Just got back from colonoscopy

No polyps, so that's good. But I was surprised to find out that my entire colon was ulcerated. The nurse showed me the pictures from the scope and they were just so scary looking :(

They're prescribing me prednisone for 6 weeks ontop of 3 liada pills a day in conjunction with that.

I'm relieved to have had it done... At least I know what is going on now. I am a bit upset about how much bleeding I'm currently having since the scope though. They said it would be normal because they took a lot of biopsies and because I was so inflamed, but I guess I just wasn't expecting it. Hopefully when I start prednisone later today that will help stop the bleeding.

sorry about the bleeding but sounds like you are on a good plan to getting well. Sometimes it could take a little time for the pred to work, sometimes it took a little longer so don't give up hope.

What was your original diagnosis and when?

Sucks it's pancolitis now...hope you feel better soon.

When do you go back for the results of your biopsies?

WingZero, thank you for the update. I am happy it's just UC and nothiing else (UC is bad enough alone), though it's not looking great right now, it will improve.

Sorry to hear that but I'm glad you made it through the scope ok. Have you tried any other meds in the past besides lialda? I can't remember if you have been on rectal meds. They Rowasa enemas helped me get out of my initial flare which was affecting my entire colon.

Thank you everyone. I've admittedly been quite depressed since I got back from the procedure, with thoughts of what my future holds in store for me rushing through my head. I really appreciate all your guys' support <3

Sara, the only meds I've been on in the past are asacol, lialda, and prednisone. I have not tried rectal meds but I may bring that up when I go to my follow up appt. in two weeks.

Yes, I would definitely ask about mesalamine enemas (brand name: rowasa in the U.S.). They aren't as bad as they may sound and they've helped many on this forum! I had to ask my GI for them but he gladly prescribed them. I know with Asacol you can go up to 12 pills/day. That's what I'm on. I'm not sure about the equivalency with Lialda but you could maybe ask about upping that too. Try not to think too much into the future. One day at a time...

I think that if you're having some bad symptoms, you should be on the maximum dose of Lialda, which is four, and should DEFINITELY be on mesalamine enemas!

I don't really know how "bad" my symptoms are. There hasn't been much bleeding since my flare started two months ago (with the exception of the bleeding from the biopsies today), not too much pain... But definitely frequent bathroom trips (all brownish liquid like water, sometimes just mucus with a pinkish tinge) and urgency. I'll have to ask about the enemas when I go back in two weeks. Right now I'll be on 40mg of prednisone for two weeks before I taper to 30 for 1 week and then 20 for another week. Does anyone else think that taper is a bit strange? My last taper was shorter, but it tapered from 40-30-20-10 before I was finally off. Although I wasn't taking liada at the time so perhaps that has something to do with it? Maybe she thinks when I taper off prednisone the lialda will have kicked in to take over by then?
