Alinia for colitis?

Apparently it's pretty new. My doc just prescribed it on top of my monthly Remicade infusions. Should I use or just throw prescription away? What say you healingwell?

I just looked it up and it says its used to treat diarrhea caused by a parasite. I don't know that I would just take it for the hell of it unless there was a reason to be. Just my opinion.

Ditto sherbear46. I'd want to know why your doc thinks this would help. Did you recently have a stool test or anything?

I had cryptosporidium, a parasite and was given Alinia to treat it. I did not react to it well at all. It seemed to cause a worsening in my symptoms (I was going to the bathroom every hour and was hospitalized). The symptoms worsened after I started the med and got better after I stopped; however, I believed it also kicked off my current UC flair. I think my reaction was atypical, but I just wanted to give you a headsup.

Alinia is often thrown into the mix like other anti-biotics hoping it may help with a flare.  Yes, Alinia is specifically for parasites, but is used as a "chaser" with others for uc.  Flagyl, Vancomycin, Rifaxamin, etc., are for bacteria, but also used sometimes for random uc flares.  I wish I didn't know this, but unfortunately I do.  Doctors have a long list of meds at their disposal to run through on any given patient with IBD.  They follow their protocol as to what order and for what specific symptoms.  But, at the end of the day, it is a crap shoot (no pun intended).

The chaser term refers to a different antibiotic being started immediately following the conclusion of another antibiotic. I think Doctors like to rotate or change up different antibiotics when particular ones start to lose effectiveness.
