 Lately I have been experiencing a potential new side effect of my medication or a new annoyance I have to deal with.  The past few days, my scalp has been extremely itchy almost to the point where I want to rip my hair out! I've been using some medicated shampoo for this, but it doesn't seem to help at all.

Not only that, my skin has been itchy as well in the most randomest of places (my fingers, waist, behind my ears, forehead,). It is driving me crazy, especially when I want to sleep. I have been applying some anti-itch cream on those affected areas for temporary relief. Luckily, I meet with my GI tomorrow, but I am still curious if anyone has these same symptoms? If they do, how did they alleviate them? Thanks.

FYI: My medication is 4 tablets of Prednisone in the morning and 6 Asacol HD during the span of the day.

this is what happens to me and my daughter when our seasonal allergies get bad. try taking an antihistamine and see if it helps. Benadryl is cheap and easy but may knock you out. I use the generic Zyrtec for non-drowsy effective allergy relief.

When you see the doctor tomorrow, insist on appropriate blood testing to make sure it's not liver, or to see if it's more proabable to be a reaction.

If you do get some relief from antihistamine, it's possible it's an allergy, but of what...you should be referred to a specialist to get it sorted out.

It could also be autoimmune...

Are you having a rash?

Hope it gets sorted out quickly...I know how it can be, but only on a small scale compared to what you're suffering.

I have scalp dryness and itching. It just recently began. I am going to try nizoral shampoo. You should see a dermatologist. Many of these skin issues can be AI related. There are creams you can use that may be helpful. I would think the prednisone would alleviate the skin issues if they were AI related but I am no expert. Hopefully the GI will have a solution.

Quincy what is the liver connection to these symptoms? Just curious, I had elevated liver enzymes my last blood test but my repeat test last week they were all back to normal. However this thread caught my attention because I have the same itching problems and then you mentioning liver peaked my curiosity.

OMG! I am glad to have read this... my scalp and skin has been driving me crazy lately also!! I have lowered my dose of Lialda to 2 a night about 3 weeks ago but didn't even think that could be related to the medication or UC.... thought maybe since the weather is changing that is why I am dry and ichy but never has my scalp been like this... am going to try the antihistamine tonight and see if that makes any difference...

Itchy skin and scalp here too! I think it is change of season. My skin often changes in the fall. However, I also just stopped taking pred, so the pred may have been helping.

Les us know what your Dr says.

Sorry for the delay as I have been out of pocket for awhile. I went to my GI last week and told him about the itchiness I had. He said pred has a tendency to dry you out.  He recommended taking benadryl at night or one of those 24 hr allergy relief medicines if I needed it during the day.  It seems to be working, as a precaution I usually put some anti-itch lotion on the problematic areas before bed and that helps too.  Hope everyone can find some relief!
