Sucralose is fairly new on the artificial sweetener scene. I personally choose to NEVER use it.

There are so many people "addicted" to that stuff!!

Can't vouch for the IBD connection...But you know...today, many people are afraid of carbs, shocked (sugar..shhh) skull !!!!!

It's been around since it was discovered in 1976....it's garbage IMO (but then so is table sugar) Stevia all the way baby!!

Artificial sweeteners sure have had lots of controversy....and studies....but they continue to put in everything!  It's even in one of the quaker mini rice cakes... Reading labels is a total must, especially to know all the possible wording for them. 

I think sucralose became really popular when COKE ditched aspartame in favour for it in 2005.
I think people may also think it's better to use it since it sounds like sucrose.

Yes, and even though I don't have IBD, I cannot tolerate artificial sweetners; they give me diarrhea. Unfortunately you find them in everything! I can no longer take and OTC cold or cough medications as they are loaded with these products. I have no idea how we got here. There is nothing wrong with cane sugar.

I cannot drink my coffee without Sweet n Low. I know the stuff is absolutely horrible for me but...... Maybe it gave me UC in the first place who knows. I have a J pouch now and I still use Sweet n Low...it doesn't bother my new plumbing at all. I know I need to make an effort to just use real sugar and ditch the artificial stuff.

This week I cut out all sucralose containing pre-workout powders.

It is CLEARLY THE problem. Completely normal ever since. Need to find a stevia based product.

I drank a lot of Diet Coke before getting UC 11 years ago. Is that the reason? Maybe. There were a lot of conducive factors in my life along with Diet Coke intake including stress, antibiotics, anemia due to a different medical problem (now cured). I was an extremely healthy person before getting UC so maybe it took more than one factor to bring me down.

Honey is my sweetener now, no artificial sugar for a couple of years even though SCD allows SweetNLow I think.

So when will independent research run a study and show results that replace "conjecture"? Because that's all the article is. Be nice to see some facts.

I read a study about artificial sweetners. I don't have the link anymore but I concluded from that study that every 'popular' sweetner in the marker has some or the toxic effect that I don't want to see with me. e.g. Aspartame is neurotoxin and is one of the major cause of migraine. None of the sweetners have been tasted for their reactions in hot conditions e.g. when added to boiling tea so whatever happens you have to deal with it, without knowing what happened.

Even, honey should not be used in hot stuff like tea.

The study that I went though did not make any connection of artificial sweetners to IBD, neither in my case I was using them before being diagnosed with IBD.

If you are really on artificial sweetner, give a try to Stevia. The cost is little prohibiting but I plan to start it. (just starting too many things at the moment, so one supplement or change per month is the plan.)

It's used in cooking a LOT....

Honey can cause diarrhea since it has a laxative effect...I think it depends on how it affects one.

As I said earlier, I don't really remember what the article said about its effect but after reading that I asked my mom to discontinue practice of using honey in tea.

I will try. I came across this article really a long time back when I could not control my migraines. If I find it, I will certainly post here.

I go through so many articles each day for UC, migraine and my son's autism that I tend to keep only conclusion in my mind.
