Just read about a Study to investigate the safety and possible clinical benefit of Multistem (r) for patients
with Moderate to Severe Ulcerative Colitis
Multistem (r) is a new biological product, muanufactured from human stem cells obtained from acult bone marrow
or other nonembryonic tissue sources.
Factors are believed to reduce inflamation and regulate immune system function, protect damaged or injured cells and
tissues, promote formation of NEW blood vessels, and augment tissue repair and healing. Multistem cell treatment resulted
in significant efficacy jin a mouse model of GRAFT versus Host Disease with almost COMPLETE reversal of gastrointestinal pathology.
These data, together with safety data generated in 2 other clinical trials, suggest that MULTISTEM has the potential to be a NEW
TREATMENT and option for patients with ULCERATIVE COLITIS.

I found this info when looking for Gov. Clinical Trials at the National Institute of Health.
This study is currently recruiting participants.
Sure am hoping this will be a cure for you folks, as my son feels hopeful.

I posted this a few months ago and didn't get too much of a response. I find it very interesting but I believe there are a lot of risks involved with the procedure? I hope some day it is safe and effective - I am not sure if I would jump at the opportunity right now.

Certainly any clinical trial has risks, however Multistem has a phase 1 trial completed (Heart Attack), another phase 1 fully enrolled (GVHD) and a phase 2 (Stroke) now enrolling patients and no adverse safety concerns have been reported and encouraging signs of efficacy have been reported on the first two indications. In addition, the UC study is being run by Pfizer which has responsibility for development, regulatory and commercialization. They procured the license for Multistem for IBD (UC and Crohns) from Athersys, Inc. back in late 2009 and are already in Phase 2 development. That's impressive progress already in its development in today's FDA regulatory environment!!!! Although will be years before it is determined, this is possibly a "game changer" in the treatment of UC based upon the pre-clinical info I have read and the fact that Pfizer thought enough of it to "buy in".
